Evan Elan’s Biography
Evan Elan is CEO and Managing Director of Ivy Country Adventures, based in Ashburn, Virginia. This organization specializes in summer camp experiences and teen travel programs and reflects his lifelong passion for outdoor activities and leadership, nurtured since his childhood in Merrick, New York.
Evan's journey into the world of camping and mentorship began in his youth when he first took on the role of a tennis instructor at Coleman Country Day Camp in his hometown. His engagement continued through his teenage years as he participated in Camp Pontiac in Copake, New York, and embarked on enriching teen tours along the East Coast and into Mexico. These formative experiences were crucial in developing his leadership and youth development skills, which are central to his role today.
As a camp counselor, Evan was dedicated to creating enriching summer experiences for campers, focusing on their safety, skill development, and overall well-being. His effective leadership was supported by his first aid and CPR training, essential skills for managing young groups safely. His ability to multitask and strong interpersonal skills also significantly impacted his successful tenure as a counselor.
The inspiration for Ivy Country Adventures came after Evan transitioned from his role as a senior associate in a corporate internal investigations firm in Manhattan and Washington, DC. The birth of his daughter Sylvie prompted him to move to Loudoun County, Virginia, where he envisioned a new type of summer camp that would teach life skills and independence, much like those he learned during his childhood.
Ivy Country Adventures goes beyond traditional camping by building a community that supports teenagers' personal and social development. The camp facilitates the creation of new friendships and the expansion of social networks, which Evan believes are vital during the challenging teenage years. His programs enhance emotional intelligence and build resilience through activities that foster teamwork, creativity, and problem-solving.
Physically active and engaging, the camp encourages teens to participate in various sports and outdoor activities, promoting healthy living and lifelong fitness habits. These activities also serve as a break from the digital world, ensuring teens spend their summer actively and productively.
Evan's Teen Travel Program is an integral part of the camp's offerings. It is designed to instill confidence and foster personal growth through travel. This program challenges teens to navigate new situations and cultures, broadening their perspectives and enhancing their independence. The travel experiences are intended not only to entertain but also to develop essential skills like planning, organization, and cognitive flexibility.
Furthermore, Evan aims to inspire a sense of purpose in the teenagers who participate in his programs. By exposing them to new experiences and cultures, he hopes to ignite their passions and show them the impact they can have on the world. His educational background from the University of Maryland and George Washington University Law School equips him with the necessary skills to lead this ambitious initiative.
Under Evan Elan's leadership, Ivy Country Adventures is not just a summer camp—it's a transformative experience that prepares young individuals for the complexities of life and nurtures the next generation of leaders and innovators.
