Sally Rooney's Israel boycott over publication of her new book will only backfire
ACRE, Israel — Sally Rooney is a 30-year-old Irish writer of immense talent and insight whose novels critics and readers alike feel accurately portray the complicated lives of her own generation. Global success has provided her with an enormous platform, making hers a voice that people listen to. Punishing us this way causes Israelis to dig in their heels, and the realization of peace moves further from reach, all sides hunkered down behind thick layers of armor and stone.
Arab-Jewish violence in Israel threatens coexistence. My neighbors and I won't give in.
ACRE, Israel — In my early 50s, nearly 30 years after I moved to Israel from Ohio, I bought the home of no one’s dreams: a dilapidated 300-year-old Ottoman ruin in the ancient Mediterrean city of Acre filled with an entire neighborhood’s junk and two live horses. My sons looked at one another and said, “Well, there goes our inheritance.” I was buoyed by the extraordinary outpouring of support and love and encouragement from around the world and — most notably — from my Arab friends and neighbors.
A violent mob destroyed the oasis we created in Acre

The Poetry of Yehuda Amichai
By – February 15, 2016 In his introduction to The Poetry of Yehuda Amichai, Robert Alter, the editor of the volume and author of some of the translations it contains, strikes a note of frustration. He worries that in translation, Amichai’s poems lose the allusions, double meanings, and inventive sound play that characterize their Hebrew originals; translated into English, these richly allusive poems seem to focus merely on simple, daily life.
My Favorite Books of 2019

I always have a book on me and am always on the lookout for my next read. 2019 was a great year for reading. Not only did I read some incredible books, but I also crushed my Goodreads reading challenge.
The Parting Gift
With Humbert Humbert, the terrible and eloquent storyteller of LOLITA, Vladimir Nabokov gave readers the classic unreliable narrator. His thoughts and actions were perverse, and his lack of accountability was mystifying. Yet LOLITA remains a compelling and genius work of literature due, in no small part, to the challenge Humbert Humbert creates as the truth is obscured.
In Praise of the Epistolary Novel
In the current world of electronic communication, epistolary looks more like an online weapons outlet than its much tamer true self. Then again, poisoned letters are at the heart of many great works of literature, and letters in general have had the power to upset, alter and even ruin lives, the embodiment of the idea that the pen is mightier than the sword.
The Parting Gift
My friends handed over the baskets, and he weighed and punched in numbers until eventually he came up with a grand total that could have been a completely bogus number but I suspected was not. He dumped everything into plastic bags with the same logo as his T-shirt and handed them over. Maya and Danny and Ariella took out their wallets and paid in cash. “This is a really great place,” Maya said to Uzi. “We read about you in Haaretz.” He nodded.
THE PARTING GIFT
A novel about sexuality, acceptance, and Middle Eastern culture. National Jewish Book Award winner Fallenberg’s (When We Dance on Water, 2011, etc.) most recent novel starts when an unnamed narrator decides to write a letter to Adam, his old college friend, who's sitting across the room from him. Months before, the narrator arrived at Adam’s doorstep in a "middling city of America," providing no explanation as to why, how, or for how long.
