Estimation of Excess Ice and Thaw Settlement in Frozen Soil Using Industrial Computed Tomography
1 Introduction Excess ice—ground ice exceeding the pore volume that the ground would have under natural unfrozen conditions [1]—is a key concept in permafrost science, with relevance across geomorphology, geotechnical engineering, and climate research. The term “excessive ice” and “excess ice” appeared in early foundational works of Taber [2], Pihlainen and Johnston [3], and Mackay [4, 5], reflecting the early recognition of its importance in frozen ground environments.

Opinion: Act now, at Capitol Hill and Beacon Hill, to preserve voting rights
Evan J. Francis Someday all Americans will look back at this moment. The days of 2021 and 2022 when Democrats have taken the step of fighting for voting rights while Republicans still praise the most anti-democratic president of the United States who has spread lies to divide and actively disenfranchise voters nationwide. Voter suppression targets minorities and those who have been disenfranchised since the founding of this country.
Opinion: Why flying the LGBTQ+ Pride flag is so important, including here in Taunton
Evan Francis is a Taunton resident. I greatly appreciate and thank Taunton City Council for their unanimous vote to fly the LGBTQ+ Pride flag at Taunton City Hall, as well as Mayor O’Connell for recognizing pride month with an official proclamation. But O’Connell’s decision to reject flying the Pride Flag in front of City Hall is quite disappointing. Especially after last year's brutal hate crime against gay Taunton residents, just for being proud of who they are and displaying the Pride flag.
It is a crucial time in this nation's history; vote
Evan J. Francis Evan J. Francis lives in Taunton. I am a 17-year-old senior in high school. I should be writing my college essay, applying for college, focusing on my studies and hanging out with my friends. But instead, I am writing this letter. I am absolutely sick and tired of all the hate and anger that is portrayed throughout this country and society. This is not the America I should be growing up in.

Survivor New Zealand 2018 Episode 14 Recap
I am going to start with what everyone was talking about last week, the cliffhanger from Adam’s jury villa. The day after Adam arrives, Matt decides that it is time to let someone in on the secret that he and Dave are childhood friends. Matt believes he trusted Adam so much and feels he deserves to know this. Wow. I know it must be hard for Matt to hold that secret in for so long, especially once you are in normal living conditions and it doesn’t seem to be as big of a deal for you anymore.
Survivor New Zealand 2018 Episode 12 Recap
The moment we were all waiting for finally happened. We had been wondering for several weeks now whether or not someone would be willing to make the big move in this game. Would we continue the ‘next one up’ mantra or would someone shake things up? Tonight we got the answer. But first, the recap… After last week’s tribal council, the group returns to camp to find their tarp they conveniently were using as a mattress was filled with water from the rain.
Survivor New Zealand 2018 Episode 10 Recap
Last week’s episode was one for the books. We had a huge blindside, a bunch of stunned faces, and history being made as Brad became the first person in Survivor New Zealand to be voted out with an idol in his pocket. It was arguably the best episode of the series thus far. I feel like this is a theme with this season though. Each episode has made me excited to watch the next, something that can’t be said all the time with Survivor seasons, especially recently.
Survivor New Zealand 2018 Episode 8 Recap
We’re back after last week’s debacle, where we saw arguably the two most strategic players leave the game in a matter of fifteen minutes. Before we get started on this episode, I wanted to say my piece about last week, which hopefully does not signify the downfall of this season, as I still have high hopes. I don’t understand the move by Chani. I’ve heard the argument that they didn’t trust Dylan, so they wanted him out, but I still don’t see any logic behind the move.
Survivor New Zealand 2018 Episode 6 Recap
What an episode we have on our hands this week. A breakout episode for Renee, a thrown challenge, and a major blindside. You can never complain about having too much action in one episode that’s for sure. We return from tribal council, where Liam was just voted out. The idol played on Eve (first ever!) was unsuccessful and it really turned out to be a win-win-win for the Khangkhaw group. They voted out a Chani member, flushed the idol, and secured trust between the four.
Survivor New Zealand 2018 Episode 3 Recap
Hello all, I am back to recap the third episode. After two quality episodes to start the new season, I feel like this episode was a lot more straightforward from the previous ones. It was an episode filled with very poor gameplay and strategy from almost everyone. But I guess I can take solace in making fun of the poor strategic play, so there is that. We begin the episode with the Chani tribe returning from Tribal Council, where Karla was the most recent member to have been voted out.
Survivor New Zealand 2018 Premiere Recap
Kia ora everyone! I’m excited to be back to provide my critically acclaimed recaps for Season 2 of Survivor New Zealand. Last time you heard from me, I was busy complaining about the winner of the first season of this very show. Luckily, that is in the past, and we have a brand new set of contestants ready to bring the show to a whole new level.
Survivor New Zealand Finale Recap : Inside Survivor
We have crowned New Zealand’s very first Sole Survivor, Mr. Avi Duckor-Jones. In what was an enjoyable season and a very good start to the hopeful New Zealand series, we finished the game with a winner that is very representative of Kiwis as a whole. Avi demonstrates the characteristics any person would love to have: integrity, honesty, and loyalty. He played a great game and was able to keep his hands clean for most of it.
Survivor New Zealand Episode 18 Recap : Inside Survivor
Only two episodes to go, and they should be eventful due to the setup from this current episode. But that is just what this episode is – a setup. As much drama as there could have been come the final three, it was dissipated because of the unknown looming at Redemption Island. I think it was a big mistake by the producers to wait until the final three to bring back two players. I like the switch to bring back two instead of one, but it should have happened last week.
Survivor New Zealand Episode 14 Recap : Inside Survivor
We’re back, back in a big way! We are beginning to wind down the season, as we are now getting a tribal per episode, which varies from the usual one per week. This week’s episode was also different, as we did not have a Redemption Island duel after a vote out. This would lead you to believe that next week will we be getting a returnee from the battle arena, which would make sense, as they are not coming back into the game at such a late point that is too an unfair advantage.
Survivor New Zealand Episode 12 Recap : Inside Survivor
Who doesn’t love a good blindside? In this episode, we had arguably the best gameplay of the season so far, we lost a fan favorite, and the game has immediately taken a pivot. The episode starts with Mike on Redemption Island, as we are becoming accustomed to after a victory in the battle arena. He has two things on his mind. His disdain for Shannon, which is still alive and well, as his game fell apart solely on her shoulders. And his other thought is for his boo.
Survivor New Zealand Episode 10 Recap : Inside Survivor
The real game has finally begun. Survivor is the best show there is, but in almost every season the post-merge gameplay is much more captivating than the pre-merge. This is due to the sheer fact that the game is getting closer to its conclusion and players feel the need to make big moves to improve their resume. This is the reason we all watch this show we love so much. I want to start off by saying congratulations to my rival, Shay, on making it back into the game.
Survivor New Zealand Episode 8 Recap : Inside Survivor
Down goes my rival! My arch nemesis has been voted off of the Mogoton tribe and will be heading to Redemption Island. Most of her game was spent making nonsensical moves, and what karma it is to have Tom be a part of her downfall, the exact person Shay had wanted gone the entire game.
Survivor New Zealand Episode 6 Recap : Inside Survivor
The tribe swap era continues. In recent seasons this has been all the rage, sometimes happening several times before the merge. Before seeing the preview, I was thinking we were going to get a relatively straightforward season with not much trickery other than the Redemption Island twist. I could not have been more wrong, and the season that was taking the old-school approach to the game took a turn into the new age of Survivor. Well kind of, there still are not any idols.
Survivor New Zealand Episode 4 Recap : Inside Survivor
Three episodes down and it is only Day 7 when we begin this episode. We are on pace for a measly 20 episodes in this the premiere Survivor New Zealand season. I love Survivor and all, but having more episodes than players in the game may be prove to be difficult to keep things entertaining. But without further ado, we move onto the recap of the fourth episode. We begin with Sala and Lou returning to camp after witnessing the Redemption Battle.
Survivor New Zealand Episode 2 Recap : Inside Survivor
The second episode of Survivor New Zealand is in the books! The show came out firing in the first episode with two boots and the Redemption Island twist reveal. Naturally, the second episode was a little more anticlimactic. As is usual early in the game, this episode consisted of a lot of alliances being created, some of which already seem to be having trouble, but it gave us a peek into how these unknown players are planning on playing the game.
