Opinion: How Flock became public enemy No. 1
“The Emperor is a fan of Flock,” a man dressed as Darth Vader told a San Diego City Council meeting last month. Likening the A.I. surveillance vendor Flock Safety to the villainous galactic empire in “Star Wars,” he continued: “We must continue utilizing Flock technologies so that we can follow and surveil the rebel scum.” The same day that video went viral, the town of Hopkinton, Mass., joined more than a dozen neighboring municipalities in canceling their contract with Flock.

Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce got to buy MSG’s privacy. Her fans aren’t so lucky.
Earlier this month, an investigative journalist revealed that buried in a trove of hacked documents from Madison Square Garden, there was a three-page dossier about … me. It was in a folder titled "Facial Recognition Activists," and time-stamped screenshots made it clear that someone had been keeping close tabs on me. As a public-facing activist, this isn't my first time being targeted by powerful people I'm trying to hold to account.
A line-by-line analysis of Governor Maura Healey’s proposed social media legislation
Here is Evan Greer (she/her) from Fight for the Future’s line-by-line analysis of Massachusetts Governor Maura Healey’s proposed social media legislation, included in her supplemental budget. The text begins on page 10 here: https://www.mass.gov/doc/supp-release/download. Summary of Concerns: Requires age verification (left to AG to enforce but this means an ID check or face scan) at the app / website level. This is the most invasive and unsafe form of age assurance.
Op-Ed: With KOSA, Elizabeth Warren is Betraying the Trans Youth She Claims to Protect

Some Democrats Are Helping the Trump Admin's Anti-LGBTQ+ Tech Agenda
Greggory DiSalvo This op-ed from Fight for the Future, a group organizing around the internet and political power, criticizes Democrats' backing of age verification laws and attacks on Section 230 as enabling a censorious MAGA agenda. In his first few months in office, President Donald Trump and his cronies wasted no time targeting LGBTQ+ communities with a slew of discriminatory executive orders, most of them aimed specifically at trans people.

Boston LGBTQ organizations use karaoke to kick off “Queers Against Censorship” campaign urging Massachusetts lawmakers to oppose dangerous legislation like the Kids Online Safety Act
Last night, queer activists and community packed The Midway Cafe in Jamaica Plain, turning its weekly Queeraoke event into a protest pressuring MA lawmakers like Senators Warren and Markey who are key swing votes on the issue. BOSTON, MA – A coalition of local LGBTQ organizations packed The Midway Cafe in Jamaica Plain, MA last night for a “Queers Against Censorship” party.
Why I Confronted Nancy Mace
The goal of my protest wasn’t to convince bigots to stop spreading hate. It was to spark conversation among advocacy groups and philanthropists about how we resist tech-enabled fascism. On Thursday of last week, I was tossed out of a tech conference in Washington, DC because I stood up and spoke out against a vile bigot––and sitting member of Congress––who had been invited to speak. I would do it again. I want to be clear that the goal of my protest wasn’t to convince haters to stop spreading hate.

We’ve Been Fighting Each Other While Big Tech Gets Away With Murder. To Win Liberatory Tech Policy, We Need A Unified Strategy And A Clear Division Of Labor.
The movement to hold Big Tech accountable is growing, but we’re struggling. As the clock runs out on this Congress, it looks increasingly likely that nothing will be done to rein in the abusive practices of Silicon Valley giants. The stakes couldn’t be higher.
KOSA, a Bill That Purports to Protect Kids from Big Tech, Poses Grave Danger to LGBTQ+ Youth
Pride Month is over. As the “LOVE IS LOVE” banners come down and companies lose the rainbow gradients from their logos, we’re faced with a painful truth: LGBTQ+ people, especially the most marginalized among us, are in the crosshairs of a queerphobic backlash that is targeting our health, our histories, and especially our youth. And things are getting worse, not better. According to NPR, half of all US states now ban gender-affirming care for people under 18.
Civil rights organizations oppose xenophobic TikTok ban, implore Congress to pursue common sense privacy legislation instead
From the RESTRICT Act to this most recent legislative attempt (Protecting Americans from Foreign Adversary Controlled Applications Act) to ban TikTok, Fight for the Future has continued to call it like it is: the rhetoric fueling a TikTok ban is a xenophobic, moral panic about the content on TikTok, disregarding the 150 million users in the US that use the app for news, small business, community organizing, and free expression.
Mass warrantless surveillance runs rampant, thanks to Section 702. Key Democrats want to make the problem even worse Original
By Evan Greer4 minute Read With less than a year to go before the 2024 election, Democratic leaders and pundits are constantly telling us that we are facing unprecedented threats to our democracy. They frame the stakes of the election as a last stand against authoritarian takeover. They’re not wrong about the threat.

POV: Net neutrality is back, and telecom giants are up to their usual dirty tricks By Evan Greer October 05, 2023 Can you hear that? That’s the sound of an army of well-paid public relations consultants frantically typing up op-eds and blog posts at the behest of internet giants like Comcast, Verizon, and AT&T. Internet Censorship Won't Make Kids Safe
Today’s young people have a lot to deal with. Pandemic interruptions, social isolation, climate change, political polarization, ever-changing technology — all on top of the typical turbulence of adolescence. Studies on youth mental health outcomes show increasing loneliness and hopelessness, illustrating one thing: the kids are not alright. We all want a silver bullet for the youth mental health crisis, and some lawmakers are claiming they have one: the Kids Online Safety Act, or KOSA for short.

ACTION ALERT: Trump Rules Remain at FCC as Democrats Cave to Big Cable, Fox News
Remember Ajit Pai, the former Verizon lawyer Trump put in charge of the Federal Communications Commission (FCC)? When he gutted net neutrality rules and kneecapped the agency’s ability to regulate telecom monopolies, voters from across the political spectrum were outraged. The internet erupted in protest. Millions of people from across the political spectrum called their elected officials and submitted comments to the FCC, and thousands took to the streets.

23 hours ago Al Sharpton described the five officers charged with the murder of Tyre Nichols as "punks" during the 29-year-old's funeral. "How dare you," the veteran civil rights campaigner asked during an impassioned eulogy at the service on Wednesday, 1 February. In the fiery speech, he said: "You don't fight gangs by becoming five armed men against an armed man.

Tornado Cash Sanctions Are Unduly ‘Creative’ With the First Amendment
In May, Nicholas Weaver suggested in Lawfare that the U.S. Treasury should “creatively” sanction Tornado Cash. In August, the Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) followed Weaver’s advice. The results were pretty disastrous for civil liberties, beginning with OFAC’s listing of 21 instances of autonomous code published to a blockchain as sanctioned entities with little clarity on the intent or scope of that action.

Section 230 Is a Last Line of Defense for Abortion Speech Online
Forced-birth extremists are not satisfied with shutting down abortion clinics. They also want to scrub accurate information about abortion access from the internet. In a post-Roe world, defending online speech about abortion—and the ability for abortion advocates and providers to fundraise and organize online—is a matter of life or death. Democrats who have been misguidedly attacking Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act need to wake up now.

Congress Must Pass Federal Data Privacy Law to Protect Democracy
January 6, 2021 will be remembered as one of the darkest days for democracy in modern U.S. history, and the attack's anniversary coincides with the kickoff of an election year. Some lawmakers responded to January 6 by attempting to reduce online free speech by modifying Section 230. However, this misguided approach would fail to address radicalization and hate online, undermine human rights, and further solidify Big Tech's domination of the internet.

Protest Song Of The Week: 'It's Been Burning For A While' By Chris Pierce
When news hit that Derek Chauvin was found guilty on all three counts for the murder of George Floyd, there was a collective sigh of relief. But the fact that the verdict was in doubt is evidence that there is still a long way to go. The reality is that since the trial started on March 29, police have on average killed more than three people a day in the United States, including 13-year-old Adam Toledo in Chicago and 20-year-old Daunte Wright in Minnesota.
