Interview
What was your first job as a journalist?
Stringer for radio networks and wires
Have you ever used a typewriter?
Yes. (Please don't make me do it again.)
How is social media changing news?
On the good side, it makes it easier for hidden stories to emerge, minus the usual filters.
Who's your favorite fictional journalist?
Superman
What does it mean to be a journalist?
It means to be a story-teller. It's really two jobs: writer and reporter. Very different skill sets for each
What's the funniest news-related #hashtag you've seen?
How do you prefer to be pitched on stories?
E-mail. But I truly beg that people first know what kinds of pieces we cover. Then please say that in the pitch.
What tools and software do you use to do your job?
WordPress, Word, iPad, Dell laptop, iPhone
What's your favorite social network?
Twitter, followed closely by LinkedIn.
Who do you wish followed you?
Anyone other than police at 2 AM if I've been speeding.
Why did you become a journalist?
To ask people personal questions and get paid for it.
Did you work for your high school newspaper? If so, what did you do there?
Was Editor-in-Chief of my high school paper for two years. (And my career's gone downhill ever since.)
What story are you most proud of writing or working on?
On the good side, many good stories get out that wouldn't have gotten out before. On the bad side, a lot of garbage also gets through.
What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?
If you don't have the passion for chasing the story without limit, do something else.
When's the best time to pitch you?
If it's really a story for us, any time.
