HIV-1 Vif disrupts phosphatase feedback regulation at the kinetochore, leading to a pronounced pseudo-metaphase arrest
eLife Assessment This study provides a convincing explanation for why HIV-1 Vif causes a qualitatively different cell cycle arrest to its accessory gene counterpart Vpr. The authors use elegant time-dependent microscopy reporter assays in immortalized tumor cell models to show that HIV-1 Vif causes a pseudo-metaphase arrest rather than a G2 arrest.
Investing in Emerging Markets excluding China
Skip to main content Investing in Emerging Markets excluding China Section 1 China’s economic and geopolitical significance in the modern era began to emerge in 1978 when the Chinese Communist Party targeted economic growth through foreign capital and an emphasis on technological development.
EM equities: A year of positive inflection
In 2022, Emerging Market (EM) equities sold off on heightened risk aversion associated with geopolitical risk, reactive Fed monetary tightening and the strict zero-Covid enforcement policy enacted by its largest economy and the stock market, China. While 2023 is set to see the global economic backdrop remain challenging, the EM stock market performance is likely to behave much more positively and offers an exciting investment opportunity.
The Reality of ESG Integration in Emerging Markets Equity
Successful investing in Emerging Markets is inextricably linked to a deep understanding of Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) factors. Developing countries are likely to face a disproportionate impact from some of the sustainability challenges facing the world today, in particular the risks associated with climate change.
An Established Case and Emerging Trends for Frontier Markets Equity Investing
The terminology ‘Frontier Markets’ inspires images of exotic geographies, colourful politics and investor adventurism. Yet the investment outcome for a globally diversified and liquidity focused FM portfolio is much more predictable and reliable; underpinned by over two decades of proof statement.
Equity Outlook 2022: Emerging Markets
Emerging Markets (EM) have demonstrated their resilience during the greatest economic shock since the Global Financial Crisis. This was contrary to market expectations and through 2021 EM stock markets suffered several pullbacks and saw their earnings multiple de-rated. We highlighted in last year’s outlook that ‘EM have undergone their most meaningful and abrupt stress test in recent history and passed… testimony to their greater resilience and maturity’.
Fire at Key U.K. Power Unit Knocks Out France Link Until October
(Bloomberg) -- A large fire at a key electricity converter station in the U.K. has shut down a major cable that brings power from France, worsening Britain’s energy crunch. Gas and power prices jumped. The outage, which the U.K.’s grid manager said will last until at least Oct. 13, couldn’t come at a worse time with supplies already short and prices at record highs. Britain is a net importer of power, with France its biggest supplier via two cables that run across the English Channel.

Brexit Bulletin: Getting Ideological
(Bloomberg) -- What’s Happening? Britain and the EU are fighting over the level playing field and businesses are nervous. The threat that the U.K.’s departure from the European Union will revive tariffs and other trade barriers was brought sharply into focus this week by Britain’s chief Brexit negotiator. David Frost warned that the EU’s demand that the U.K. will have to follow the bloc’s rules after leaving if it is to secure a trade deal like Canada’s is something Britain cannot accept.

U.K. Minting Brexit Coins Again After Delays Triggered Meltdown
(Bloomberg) -- Sign up to our Brexit Bulletin, follow us @Brexit and subscribe to our podcast. The U.K. government reckons it will be third time lucky for its ill-fated Brexit coins. Earlier this year, then Chancellor Philip Hammond planned a batch of 50 pence coins to commemorate the original March 29 Brexit day. When the U.K.’s exit from the European Union was delayed, his successor Sajid Javid produced about one million of the seven-sided coins stamped with the Oct. 31 date.

Boris Johnson’s Double Gamble on an Unpredictable U.K. Election
(Bloomberg) -- Will it be the most wonderful time of the year for Boris Johnson? If he gets his December election, the U.K. prime minister would be taking a double gamble. Not only would he be holding it at a time of year when elections haven’t been held in modern times, but he would also be going in with the defining issue of his premiership unresolved. That makes the outcome all the harder for traders to predict. Take the polls. With Brexit set to be delayed until Jan.

Johnson’s First Battle With MPs: The 2020 Trade Cliff Edge
(Bloomberg) -- As Boris Johnson prepares for a knife-edge vote on his Brexit deal tonight, the big question dogging some of the waverers is: how do we stop another no-deal cliff edge a year from now? According to the bill, published late on Monday, Britain will have until 2020 to sign a trade agreement with the European Union. But if that doesn’t happen, and the two sides fail to agree to extend the transition period, the country could still crash out of the EU.
Betrayal, Jealousy and Cliff Edges: Johnson’s Brexit Minefield
(Bloomberg) -- Boris Johnson is giving members of Parliament only a few days to debate the most important change to Britain’s constitution in almost 50 years. The outcome will decide the fate of Brexit and potentially his own future. Unlike his predecessor, Theresa May, the prime minister wants Britain to have far looser ties with the European Union after leaving, which means withdrawing in full from the bloc’s customs union.
U.K. Lawmakers Vote to Delay Decision on Johnson’s Brexit Deal
(Bloomberg) -- U.K. lawmakers voted to delay a decision on Boris Johnson’s Brexit deal, a move that will force the prime minister to ask the European Union to postpone Britain’s departure from the bloc. Without sign-off from Parliament, Johnson is required by law to write to the EU by 11 p.m. tonight asking to delay Britain’s departure until Jan. 31.

Analysis | How Brexit Has Unleashed a U.K. Constitutional Crisis
Is Britain facing a constitutional crisis? Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s brutal battle with lawmakers over Britain’s plan to leave the European Union has led the country into uncharted waters. Along the way, the U.K.’s highest court overturned Johnson’s suspension of Parliament, political norms are being tested and even the Queen has been dragged in.

FE901/FE901: Banana Market
Banana is one of the world's most important crops grown by small- and large-scale producers alike, with production occurring in more than 130 countries. The economic importance of the banana industry encompasses (1) the generation of export earnings and (2) the employment of hundreds of thousands of people in Latin America, the Caribbean, Southeast Asia, and West Africa. In addition, the industry employs thousands of people in distribution networks and supermarkets worldwide.
Deutsche Bank and Commerzbank, Banking's Great Comedy Double Act
Even though investors seem to put more faith in Commerzbank CEO Martin Zielke than his Deutsche peer John Cryan, the smaller lender can't gloat. One quarter of beating analysts' already low expectations doesn't make a turnaround. Margins are still under pressure and costs are stubbornly high. The bank is depending on growth to offset the squeeze from negative interest rates and competition at home.
The Rarity of Sanofi's Quick-Fire Dealmaking in One Chart
It's rare for a company to announce two multi-billion dollar acquisitions within such a short period of time -- but not unheard of. This graphic shows deals announced by the same acquirer within 30 days of each other. The length of the line represents the time elapsed between the two deals. Sanofi stands out for the short period of time between the two deals -- and the size of both.
Seven Charts on Banking's Lost Decade in Europe
Europe's banking industry may be safer for taxpayers, but investors have had little reason to return to it since the crisis. There are signs lenders are starting to get to grips with their bad debt problem, and a rebounding economy should, in time, prompt the ECB to raise rates -- something that would finally provide some relief for the region's banks.
Bankers must do their bit in battle with the black hats
(Bloomberg Gadfly) -- It's shaping up to be one of the biggest data breaches in European banking, but investors are strangely unmoved. They shouldn't be complacent. Italy's UniCredit SpA said on Wednesday that the personal details of 400,000 borrowers had been compromised. The market kind of shrugged, pushing the shares down less than 1.5 percent by mid-morning. At first glance, the breach looks relatively limited: UniCredit has 25 million customers worldwide.
Deutsche Bank Has a Strange Idea of Fun
Deutsche Bank AG's CEO wants the bank to grow and shrink, to lift revenue even while it becomes more lean and mean, as Gadfly colleague Lionel Laurent has pointed out. The lender's second-quarter earnings, released on Thursday, will do little to ease investor concern about his ability to perform this contortionist act.
Bankers Must Do Their Bit in Battle With the Black Hats
Maintaining investor confidence from here on will be critical. TalkTalk Telecom Group Plc lost about 1 billion pounds of market value over the space of a year after hackers accessed the personal details of 150,000 customers. Much of that can be attributed to a tin-eared response by management and revelations that the company hadn't implemented even basic security measures. In the end, the fine from Britain's data protection regulator was a mere 400,000 pounds.
Set watches for growth at Swatch by as much as 9% | IOL
Hayek said last week the first few months of this year had been “encouraging” compared with 2016, when sales fell 11 percent and net income by 47 percent. The firm is aiming to increase sales by as much as 9 percent this year. Nick Hayek, chief executive of Swatch Group, has a habit of looking on the bright side. This time, the biggest of the Swiss watchmakers might actually be right.
