On a road trip to some of Maine’s historical opera houses this summer, two things repeatedly came up at each stop: that there were sterling acoustics and that at some point “there was a fire. …” That these theaters, all around 150 years old, are not only still standing but also very active is a testimony to the resilience of Mainers. What’s a little blaze?
How ‘Glee’ Made Musical Theater Cool
You have a preview view of this article while we are checking your access. When we have confirmed access, the full article content will load. In the 11 years since the last episode of “Glee” aired, one thing has become clear: The TV series was a game changer for musical theater. The most visible evidence of this is the ubiquity onstage of its former cast members, like Jonathan Groff, Lea Michele and Darren Criss.

They were heading out to go watch sea turtles when Khamatova looked at her phone. “I started reading, and I was sure that this is some fake,” she said in a recent interview. “It’s impossible.” It was February 2022, and the news was all too real: Russia had just attacked Ukraine.
How to Direct ‘Macbeth’ at the Met? Switch on the ‘Epic Brain’
When Peter Gelb, the Metropolitan Opera’s general manager, called Louisa Proske out of the blue, he had a tantalizing offer: Would she like to direct Verdi’s “Macbeth”? It was a flatteringly plum assignment for a rising young director on the international scene. Not only would this be a house debut for Proske, but “Macbeth” would also open the 2026-27 season, boosted by the megawatt star power of the soprano Lise Davidsen and the baritone Quinn Kelsey.

'The End of Oak Street' Review: Cul-de-Sac Dino Attack
Because it is set in 1982 and involves an American nuclear family facing extraordinary perils, David Robert Mitchell's new film is bound to be compared to that decade's finest Hollywood action fare, especially Steven Spielberg's. But what came to mind while watching some of the vistas in "The End of Oak Street" was Hieronymus Bosch.

STONINGTON, Maine -- In New York City, where John Cariani lives, theater fans know him as a character actor who can unassumingly, guilelessly ground very different shows. (2015), "The Band's Visit" (2017) and "Caroline, or Change" (2021) followed.

'Big Feelings' A little infantilizing goes a long way in Ryan Drake's immersive play, in which the audience puts its adult concerns away to become a class of first graders. After we receive our name tags, we chat with our neighbors, practice counting by twos, draw a moment when we felt overwhelmed by our circumstances and sound out tricky words. 'Giulia' Review: Jennifer Nettles Delivers Empowerment (and Poison)
NEW YORK -- Long before Agatha Christie popularized it in several books, poisoning was a favored means of dispatching enemies in past centuries. But unlike, say, the conspirators behind the "affair of the poisons" in Louis XIV's court, Giulia Tofana just wanted to help.
