As Rahul Gandhi Shies Away, Can Sonia Gandhi Salvage Congress’ Sinking Ship?
On May 25, stung by the humiliating rout of his party in the Lok Sabha polls, Rahul Gandhi told the party’s working committee that he was stepping down as Congress president. Rejecting calls for his continuance in office, Rahul gave his party colleagues a month to find his replacement who could then carry on with the task of restructuring the organisation; making it battle-ready in time for the assembly elections due in Maharashtra, Haryana and Jharkhand later this year.
Brahmaputra Changes Course
In 2017, a book titled The Last Battle of Saraighat: The Story of the BJP’s Rise in the North-East had sparked controversy in Assam for terming Assamese sub-nationalism as “anti-Indian” and a “subversive idea”. The book was authored by two political activists who were actively associated with the BJP’s successful campaign in the 2016 assembly elections. For a large number of people of the state, sub-nationalism—jatiyotabad—is the indelible, undeniable marker of Assamese identity.

It can be caused by infection, inflammation or toxic metabolic reasons, leading to affliction of the brain tissue.
The Mystery Of 'Missing' Keys To Lord Jagannath Temple’s Treasure
When the juggernaut rolls during the Rath Yatra festival in Puri on July 4, a discordant note amid the revelry would be the missing keys to Lord Jagannath temple’s treasure trove—the Ratna Bhandar. It would be more than a year since the keys went ‘missing’, and no one knows if some of the precious jewellery worth crores of rupees have also disappeared.
Not Just Muzaffarpur, AES Is Spreading Across India And Doctors Are Baffled
There are two children and two sets of parents on every bed. Young mothers cradle limp children. Fathers fuss over immobile babies, barely visible through a maze of tubes and masks. Many more lie on the floor, with parents frantically fanning them to beat the stifling heat. Nurses and doctors run around. Machines blink and glow. High-pitched wailings hush the crowd, sometimes, as little bodies swathed in white are carried out.
Good Cop Bad Cop
In Gujarat, coincidences often get too close. Who would know this better than the incarcerated and sacked IPS officer Sanjiv Bhatt, awarded a life sentence last week in a case of custodial death dating way back to 1990. Since 1991, the state government had refused permission to prosecute Bhatt and other officers in the case while investigating officers had filed a report closing the case. The courts, however, rejected the police report and a case was initiated.
The Vaastu Prince’s New Durbar Dream
The decision of Telangana CM Kalwakuntla Chandrasekhar Rao (KCR) to demolish existing structures in the secretariat and build new ones at a cost of Rs 400 crore is likely to result in a political backlash, especially as KCR blames the Centre for not granting financial support to fulfil his grandiose dreams. Many political opponents are questioning the wisdom of such expenditure when the Andhra Pradesh government has vacated the buildings.
India Lost 1/3rd Of J&K Because Of Congress, Says Amit Shah In Lok Sabha
In a scathing attack on Congess, Home Minister Amit Shah on Friday said India had lost 1/3rd of Jammu and Kashmir because of a "historical blunder" committed by the grand old party. Replying to a statutory resolution seeking Lok Sabha's nod to extend President's Rule in Jammu and Kashmir, Shah said Pakistan occupied Kashmir (PoK) should have been a part of India.
Fast Road To Nowhere
Even before the new Lok Sabha started functioning, the PM called an all-party meeting on June 19 to discuss, among other things, the idea of “one nation, one election”. This hurry is baffling. While a number of parties abstained, a diversity of opinion was expressed by those who attended. The CPI(M) argued that holding simultaneous elections to three tiers together “would require tampering with the Constitutional scheme of accountability of the government to the legislature”.
Strait Of Uncertainty
That the current US administration has no use for volumes of history is another matter, but past experience shows imposing ‘crippling sanctions’ to force adversarial nations to fall in line has seldom worked for American presidents. Armed interventions, too, send out dire warnings across the years. Afghanistan and Iraq are two notable examples, where strong-arm tactics had backfired devastatingly, effects of which blight the region still.
Not Just Milk, What's Common Between Rishabh Pant and Virender Sehwag
He has raw, uninhibited power, and his shots radiate class. And he can entertain the crowds with humongous sixes, summoned almost at will. He is Rishabh Pant, India’s most exciting young wicket-keeper-batsman. A batsman, moreover, cast in the Virender Sehwag-esque mould--not just in terms of brisk scoring, but also in diet. Both were brought up on a heavy, staple diet of milk that gave them enough strength to smite balls a long distance without a fuss.
Dance Diary
An Archive of Seasons I am reclusive. I am gregarious. I am in solitude but with a window open. When I dance the audience becomes one single point of light. When I speak, my words dance. I watch birds flying in to nest and rest for the night. That tree of silk-cotton now totally bald was green with shiny leaves. Now not one leaf to swear by. That summer when I moved here I saw huge orange-red flowers and not a single leaf.
BJP Succeeded In Creating Impression Of 'Nameless, Faceless Enemy' Coming For Hindus: Mahua Moitra
First-time parliamentarian from Bengal’s Krishnanagar constituency and Trinamool Congress leader Mahua Moitra’s maiden speech in Lok Sabha has earned her bouquets and brickbats. Liberals, secularists and many in the Opposition believe she showed the mirror to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government and summed up what the collective Opposition had, hitherto, failed to say.
