Like shadows of a musical theme
I turned up the brightness so I could kiss you It was like going giant mode Like a rabbit gave me advice And I followed And I would’ve fallen way down a deep hole Some orifice of yours Where I could study your insides Decorated as they are with exquisite taste Back home the shine is nulled Just shades of a musical theme Or it could also be said That it’s night That I never left the mirror May imagination always come before knowing Translated from the Spanish Copyright Credit: Tilsa Otta,...
Final Reflection
It’s amazing what rain can do to a stained wall Said an angel from the custodial team To the housewives Who every morning Pick up the remains of god From the dream of the working man His how-tos leave indelible marks Over the filthy land, openings in heaven Illuminated, I walk to his cave He hugs me too tight to be human His long fingers In a victory sign hold the sky up I walk over the air that I breathe I expire And somewhere it is dawning Everything breathes And it’s impossible to be dead...
Making of a Poem: Farid Matuk on “Crease”
By Farid Matuk January 3, 2024 For our series Making of a Poem, we’re asking poets to dissect the poems they’ve published in our pages. Farid Matuk’s “Crease” appears in our new Winter issue, no. 246. How did this poem start for you? Was it with an image, an idea, a phrase, or something else? The images and ideas in the poem started long ago, in college, when I met a brilliant artist named Jeannie Simms.

Commas by Miller Oberman - Poems
Difficult once I've said things to know them this morning the lights above the tollway all off at exactly 7:36 all "we took our yellow from the pewter sky." But we have so many things! Stories about our diction, the leather couch some trees and our ages. What about all the rooms the sky makes— she tried several spaces today, under a desk, a nook bent to her. I thought of picking a fight with dead Bachelard.

from ‘For a Daughter/No Address’
Reportless Subjects, to the Quick / Continual addressed— —Emily Dickinson if what etches into your eyes leaves a small canyon in its trough is there the chattering speech I don’t think it’s enough to say images seen the still Aleppo pine needles a tarp billowing at the lower winds are a weather how long could you look in the foreground at a wet child who isn’t you the two bits of peeling white light she tossed into us feel like a skein a weight water falling down your back in the bath a...

Harmony Holiday by Farid Matuk - BOMB Magazine
Harmony Holiday’s latest poetry collection, Hollywood Forever, is a synthesizing force of visual, auditory, and textual elements. It uses a variety of media to invoke black cultural icons and autobiographical details that take on the expectations of the white gaze, art for profit models, black private spaces, ancestral teachings, Afrofuturism, and more. For Holiday, visual and auditory accompaniments have always been a part of her poetry’s grammar.
