My Travels Through the World on My Copy Machine
My Travels Through the World on My Copy Machine In her black and white landscapes, Swiss photographer Dominique Teufen travels the world from her studio, using a copy machine as her vehicle. A wave licking the shore of a beach, a snow-capped mountain peak, jagged rock formations—the monochrome landscapes of Dominique Teufen feel both mysterious and familiar at the same time.
Oyster - Photographs by Marco Marzocchi
Oyster Made over the course of 10 years, Marco Marzocchi’s project Oyster confronts his difficult childhood head on through a personal journey of prickly self-reflection, intertwined with moments of tenderness. Hailing back to Ancient Egyptian iconography, the ‘ouroboros’—a snake eating its own tail—is a symbol of the cyclical nature of life. A different snake, its body twisted and contorted, graces each cover of Marco Marzocchi’s new book Oyster.
The Streets Are Ours
The Streets Are Ours For over one thousand years, stray deer have intuitively entered the Japanese city of Nara each morning, roaming its empty streets in search of food and attention. In the year 767, Takemikazuchi (the chief deity of Kashima Shrine) was ceremonially enshrined at Kasuga Shrine in Nara, in order to protect the Heijokyo capital. At the time, it was said that the God of Thunder came to Nara riding on a white deer.
All I Know Is What’s On The Internet
All I Know is What’s On The Internet is a radical new exhibition at The Photographers’ Gallery in London, curated by Katrina Sluis. Featuring works from 11 contemporary artists and groups, the show takes a diverse and critical look at image culture in the highly technological 21st century. Its title – taken from a Donald Trump quote – is a fitting precursor for what follows, reflecting the Internet’s status as the predominant distributor and appropriator of knowledge.
Landscapes - Interview by Jim Casper
Starting with wet plate collodion photos from the early 1900s, artist Peter Franck creates quirky images that twist and bend reality just enough to make you look twice. The images look old, from the turn of the 20th century, but they have a sci-fi edge to them. Filled with mysterious, unfamiliar forms, the photos look as if they’ve captured strange, unnatural phenomena on old glass plates.
Deep Park - Interview by Coralie Kraft
Ambling through Prospect Park in Brooklyn with a cart full of photographic gear in tow, Bruce Polin is an unusual sight—and yet, he explains, the curiosity he sparks with his unfamiliar equipment can lead to powerful portraits. Polin’s series Deep Park features all kinds of people: the only constant being that they have chosen to spend time in this common space.
Virtually Invisible
Virtually Invisible makes non-binary identities visible and serves as guidance for those whose identities collide with the pre-existing gender structure. Non-binary people don’t identify as men or women, which can be a challenge within a society where a binary-based model strongly determines the general course of human experience. It defines social politics and how it feels to grow up as a trans person, non-binary, or gender queer.
Just Like You, But Different
After a chance encounter with a woman at a flea market, photographer Fiona Struengmann was invited to the home of her new acquaintance, an amateur snapshot collector looking to pass on her findings to a new owner. There was only one condition: “Take it all, or leave it all behind.” Moments later, Struengmann was the new keeper of an archive containing 7,000 photographs compiled over the course of 50 years.
