Film Review: ART SPIEGELMAN: DISASTER IS MY MUSE (directed by Molly Bernstein and Philip Dolin)
OF MICE AND PENS It’s in the name: comics are supposed to be comical. The funny pages are a place for lasagna-craving kitties, pet pilots and friendly tigers — certainly not the stage on which to unpack heavy emotions or examine brutal histories. Right? Well, Art Spiegelman would beg to differ. And while the name “comics,” may prove deceiving, the name “Art” was a prophecy. The legendary cartoonist, now 77, saw the potential in comics to be deadly serious.
Theater Review: THE WOLVES (Morgan-Wixson Theatre)
JOIN THE PACK In one of The Wolves’ final moments, one character’s mom explains that she has a swear jar at home that her daughter must put a quarter in every time she says “like.” If that jar was onstage for the duration of the play, with its characters bound to the same contract of precise speech, the Morgan-Wixson Theatre would likely be bankrupt by now. But that candidness and truth-to-life is what makes Sarah DeLappe‘s The Wolves such a delight to witness.
Theater Review: SLEEPING GIANT (Road Theatre Company)
SLEEPING GIANT THINKS TOO BIG FOR ITS BRITCHES To live is to be in a constant state of suspension. One must cling to whatever helps establish a sense of permanence. A lover that won’t leave. A favorite keepsake. A belief system that promises purpose. When fear floods our homes through TV news (or its 21st-century-sibling, the doom scroll), sometimes the only way to keep from drowning in the currents of what’s current is to hold on tight.
Björk marries mushrooms, motherhood on 'Fossora'
Mushrooms and Björk’s music have a lot in common. Both are wild, but grounded. Their roots both run deep. Either one could be a stubborn relic from some fantastical ancient world, yet they are both very much alive. And when consumed, both can induce psychedelic effects. This is your brain on Björk. Now spanning four decades, the 56-year-old Icelandic oddball’s career has been marked by reinvention.
'Werq the World' struts into South Central with top-notch drag talent
Rain in Los Angeles is rare. But this weekend, South Central was drenched in an even more distinctive kind of reign: the rhinestoned, high-heeled domination of drag’s A-listers.
Step inside Sims Library of Poetry
Sims Library of Poetry, a community library in Inglewood, was originally confined to founder Hiram Sims’ suitcase, but grew to fill an entire building after donations from poets and Angelenos. Today, the collection features over 3,000 works, including many from local authors. (Fitz Cain | Daily Trojan) To passersby on Florence Avenue, one building stands out from the facades.
REVIEW: Charli XCX is mainstream in ‘Crash’

(Photo courtesy of Creative Commons) Charli XCX is a sellout. An independent student musical sends a message

‘Access denied’: Students are frustrated over testing demand, experience campus access delays after Thanksgiving break
After a five day break, students have reported difficulties accessing campus Monday because of the university’s weekly COVID-19 testing requirements. In an email sent to students on Nov. 18, Chief Student Health Officer Dr. Sarah Van Orman encouraged students to “test before travel, and after [they] return.” However, the MySHR portal has experienced heavy traffic, breeding sporadic error messages since the return.
‘A Beginner’s Mind’ champions quiet beauty
Stevens and De Augustine’s 14-track project took inspiration from several films they watched on a retreat in upstate New York. The films that inspired the project range from “Silence of the Lambs” to “Bring It On Again.” (Photo courtesy of Independent) While Sufjan Stevens is no stranger to spectacle, “A Beginner’s Mind” is his most cinematic work yet — literally.

REVIEW: ‘Harlecore’ projects its listeners into an alternate dimension
Producer Danny L Harle released 13 trippy and transportive tracks as part of his debut album “Harlecore.” Photo from @DannylHarle on Twitter. Producer Danny L Harle has never been a fan of minimalism. This has never been truer than on his debut album “Harlecore,” a high-concept, euphoric trip to an alternate dimension where dance music reigns and a bouncy blue man with big white eyes does DJ sets surrounded by floating springs.
