Penguins Wrap: Hitting a Low Point; Malkin Spotlight; Prospects Arriving
The Pittsburgh Penguins might have reached rock bottom this past week. They probably hope their no-show against the Dallas Stars was rock bottom, anyway. That helped lead to other news, as the team began calling up some of its prospects. We’ll see where that goes. They also recalled Tristan Jarry in the hope that the goaltender was able to regain his All-Star form. Evgeni Malkin’s name came up a couple times. While he doesn’t speak with reporters regularly, he often lays things bare when he does.
Penguins Can't Overcome Themselves, Rally Not Enough vs. Detroit Original
PITTSBURGH — The Pittsburgh Penguins survived their own listlessness but are still searching for their game and a little luck, too. Bryan Rust had a breakaway with three minutes remaining, but the puck rolled off his stick. The Penguins dominated a two-minute stretch on their power play, but a pair of tipped pucks went wide as Evgeni Malkin and Sidney Crosby looked at the errant redirections in disbelief.
Analysis: Jarry Might Not Get What He Wants; What Practice Showed Original
Pittsburgh Penguins goaltender Tristan Jarry is back with the NHL squad, seemingly back in a good place with the level of his game. However, after he and coach Mike Sullivan spoke with reporters Sunday, an important question arose. Will the Penguins be willing or able to provide Jarry with something he practically pleaded for, a chance to play the majority of the games for stretches?
Penguins Injury Updates on Glass, Hayes; Nieto Plan Original
A couple of injured Pittsburgh Penguins forwards could be out of the lineup for a while, according to updates provided Sunday by coach Mike Sullivan following the team’s practice at the UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex. Cody Glass, who is on IR, has been diagnosed with a concussion. There typically is no timetable for recovery and return from that injury. Kevin Hayes, who has missed the past two games because of an upper-body injury, will be out on a week-to-week basis.
Report Card: That Was the Penguins?! A Mold-Smashing 20 Minutes Original
WASHINGTON, D.C. — The Pittsburgh Penguins have an aversion to multi-goal leads and discipline. Like anxiously trying to score goals, struggling to defend is in their team DNA stretching back decades. The second period conformed to the script that you and they had seen far too often. A 2-0 lead against the Washington Capitals had become a tied game by the end of 40 minutes, and the Penguins were mired in the quicksand. Then, something changed. Or, maybe something finally … FINALLY … clicked.
Pirates AFL Updates: Khristian Curtis Fires Three Scoreless
Pirates’ affiliates picked up a 6-1 win with the Scottsdale Scorpions on Thursday, with three position player prospects and two pitchers contributing to the victory. Shortstop Kervin Pichardo went 1-for-3 with a single and a walk, knocking in two runs and scoring another himself. Right fielder Sammy Siani went 2-for-5 with two singles and added a stolen base, while catcher Geovanny Planchart picked up another single in four at-bats.
Pirates Top 30 Prospects No. 7: Hunter Barco Shines Before Injury Original
This is one in a series of stories breaking down PBN’s Top 30 Pittsburgh Pirates prospects. After the start to his professional career was delayed due to Tommy John surgery, Hunter Barco had a solid first showing in the organization in 2023. The Pirates selected Barco in the second round of the 2022 draft out of the University of Florida, but he didn’t make his debut until the following season.
Breaking: Bryan Rust at Practice, but One Forward Missing Original
ELMONT, NY — The Pittsburgh Penguins inched closer to getting winger Bryan Rust back in the lineup. Wednesday at practice at the UBS Arena, where the Penguins blew a 3-1 third-period lead the night before, Rust participated in practice without a non-contact sweater. He’s on the injured reserve list and has been out week-to-week since leaving the game in the second period against the Vancouver Canucks on Oct. 26. This season, Rust has three goals and one assist in eight games played.
Dan’s Daily: Penguins Old Problems; Flyers Trade Rumors; Scary Injury in StL
NEW YORK — We’ll stay on Long Island another day as the Pittsburgh Penguins practice later today at UBS Arena. It was another disappointing night for the Penguins, who apparently are much better in tight games than games in which they’ve earned a multi-goal lead, and they blew a 3-1 lead in a shootout loss to the New York Islanders. Only two outlets made the trip to the game, and we’re one of them. We’ve got full coverage and analysis.
Penguins Practice: The Cody Glass Audition; Injury Updates Original
CRANBERRY, Pa — All were present and accounted for except Bryan Rust, who remains on injured reserve. For the first time in a few weeks, the Pittsburgh Penguins practice was entirely and blissfully uneventful. Yes, nearly every line, except the top line with Evgeni Malkin, Sidney Crosby, and Rickard Rakell, was swapped around, but that’s been par for the Penguins’ course for two weeks running.
Dan’s Daily: The Penguins Gamble; Bruins Coach Benches Stars
The Pittsburgh Penguins enjoyed a needed off day Sunday, and they’ll hit the ice this morning at the UPMC Lemieux Complex before departing for a three-game road trip against Metro Division opponents that will surely be a litmus test for their renewed defensive commitment and top-heavy lineup. To that end, we looked at the sustainability of the “other three” Penguins lines since Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin united on the top line.
Penguins Room: Crosby Scores; Letang Chirps, ‘That Freaking Mustache!’ Original
The Pittsburgh Penguins’ three-game homestand ended on another feel-good moment as Blake Lizotte scored the empty net goal to seal the win, and defenseman Ryan Graves dropped the gloves at the final horn to defend his team’s honor after a couple of dirty hits by Montreal Canadiens defensemen Arber Xhekaj. Xhekaj speared Michael Buntings in the nether regions during a second-period power play and tried to knee Noel Acciari in the final seconds. The Penguins won 3-1, their second win in a row.
Penguins Injury Updates; Rust Improves Original
After a maintenance day Friday, Pittsburgh Penguins forward Evgeni Malkin was back on the ice Saturday morning and will be in the lineup when the Penguins face the Montreal Canadiens Saturday at PPG Paints Arena. While Malkin never visited the Penguins injury list, coach Mike Sullivan updated the others still on the injured list. Matt Nieto has rejoined the team in a full-contact capacity, but remains on LTIR. Nieto has participated in practices and morning skates.
