2 Cyclists Killed, 7 Injured By Motorist In NOLA
In this context, putting up a link to Planned Parenthood is in poor taste. Plus, they do a lot for women's health so that bums me out on two accounts. In general, in this country, being a car culture, the cyclist/bike rider is given too much responsibility in their safety and the driver too little. We don't hold our drivers accountable. We call them "accidents". We've built the roadways to be car-centric and not thought about the pedestrian and bike traffic.

The motorist is to blame. Whether or not bike lanes promote safety is a sidebar that was brought into the conversation. The motorist was negligent and is at fault, but is a bike lane that created a false sense of security a good thing. I'm not saying that this wouldn't have happened if the cyclists were riding as traffic, without a bike lane, I'm saying that a bike lane promotes the idea that a cyclist is insulated from harm by auto.

Good thought Fran. With a cop for his father, what do you suppose this guy was thinking? Do you think he looks contrite? I'm sure his father does...and is going through hell right now. I'm betting this kid was spoiled all his life. And as a teen, couldn't deal with his father's 'law and order' personality...and rebelled. And last Saturday night, he was still rebelling. So I think the message we can take from this sad episode, is to think twice about bringing more kids into our modern world.

I just saw this in The Guardian; My condolences to the victim's families. And hopes for speedy recoveries to the injured.

I Feel Invisible
Sure, I have a higher powered headlight and a blinking red rear light. BUT, motorists still seem to be blind and oddly, driving too fast down narrow streets in pitch black darkness. The last week+ has been a bit unnerving. Anyone else experiencing night blind motorists and less safe conditions since the time change? Tags: ▶ Reply to This
Anyone Riding a Belt Drive?
I'd appreciate your experiences/advice, etc. as I'm in the market. (I searched the archives and the tech has since evolved.) Thanks for your response. Tags: ▶ Reply to This
Anyone Riding a Belt Drive?
I've had a Gates belt drive for about 14 months now and I *love* it. Since I year-round bike commute, and because I have worn through many chains and even cassettes and cranks over the years, I thought it was high time that I upgraded to something that was easy maintenance.
Think of this as a Missed Connection.
You blew the red light east bound on Lawrence at Damen at 5:26 pm this evening. There was enough time for the biker in front of me to make it half way into the intersection, northbound on Damen, before you came whizzing past my front wheel. I yelled "You're an idiot!" at your big haired chick, self, and you looked back at me. I meant it! I woulda testified for any of the cars, that managed to not kill you, if they had. Witness bad behavior during your commute? Feel free to post.
