Overcoming the Challenge of Confident Identification Among Two Related Groups of 17‐Methyl Steroids by GC-MS
1 Introduction Analytical methods and possibilities in the field of bioanalytics, such as metabolomics, toxicology, or anti-doping analysis, have improved remarkably over the last decades. For instance, more diverse separation techniques like ion mobility spectrometry–mass spectrometry (IMS–MS) or supercritical fluid chromatography (SFC) are gaining in importance in these disciplines [1-4].

β‐Hydroxy β‐Methyl Butyric Acid (HMB) and Its Potential Doping Relevance: A Pilot Study on Its Urinary Excretion Profile
1 Introduction The early identification and detection of novel potential doping agents are a challenge faced by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) accredited laboratories. Besides substances specifically synthesized to enhance performance, there has been a growing interest towards “natural,” nonpharmaceutical products, such as food supplements. These supplements are sold with the alleged ability to increase the performance of amateur and professional athletes.

A SNP‐based genotyping strategy to detect the abuse of homologous blood transfusion from dried blood spots
1 INTRODUCTION Homologous blood transfusions (HBT) are prohibited by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA),1 as they are one of the illicit methods that cheating athletes may attempt to increase the oxygen supply to the tissues, with a consequent improvement of the sports performance, especially in endurance disciplines.2 The current method of detection of HBT in sport anti-doping is based on the phenotypic mismatch analysis of red blood cell surface antigens by flow cytofluorimetric...

Effect of thyroid hormones administration on urinary endogenous steroid profile of the athlete biological passport
RESEARCH ARTICLE Funding information: This work was supported by a grant from the World Anti-Doping Agency Grant (18A06XD). Abstract This work focused on the possible alterations of the markers of the steroidal module of the athlete biological passport, considering samples of athletes declaring and not-declaring the supplementation of thyroid hormones (TH) in the Doping Control Form (DCF).

Detection of urinary metabolites of arimistane in humans by gas chromatography coupled to high‐accuracy mass spectrometry for antidoping analyses
Rationale The selection of the most appropriate metabolites of the substances included in the Prohibited List of the World Anti‐Doping Agency (WADA) is fundamental for setting up methods allowing the detection of their intake by mass spectrometric methods. The aim of this work is to investigate the metabolism of arimistane (an aromatase inhibitor included in the WADA list) in order to improve its detection capacity among the antidoping community.

Metabolomics profiling of xenobiotics in elite athletes: relevance to supplement consumption
Athletes’ optimal nutritional demand is dictated by their sport-related energy demand and training regimen as well as athlete’s own metabolic requirement. Maintaining optimal nutritional need would improve performance and recovery from exercise and injury whereas inadequate nutrition could compromise both. Such optimal nutritional need varies among different sports although the most remarkable finding when reviewing the literature is the scarcity of such data [13].
A Decade of Doping - and Analytical Advances
In November, after a series of retroactive tests, the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) announced that over 70 athletes from the Beijing and London Olympics were guilty of doping violations. The ten-year testing period and increasing sensitivity of analytical tests may help ‘beat the cheats’ (and redistribute a few medals), but they also raise questions and eyebrows. In an article in the New York Times (1), WADA’s Olivier Rabin said, “Science progresses every day.
