Corrugated Metal Hose Manufacturing: Evolving Processes Improve Service Life
Flexibility Flexibility is a function of the product’s minimum bend radius (MBR), which is the smallest radius to which a hose can be bent without loss of performance. Different applications may require different aspects of flexibility. For example, some applications need a hose to accommodate sharp bends or installation in a confined footprint. Other applications may not require a tight bend but instead require a hose with a high cycle life to resist the effects of frequent flexing.
Metal Hoses on Construction Sites
The two main types of flexible metal hose are corrugated hose and stripwound hose. Both of these styles have applications at construction sites. Corrugated metal hose is formed from an airtight tube and is typically covered with one or more layers of metallic braiding to allow for higher working pressures. It is often used where temperature extremes are present or where corrosion, permeation, or fire-safety are a concern.
Metallic Hoses for Hydraulic Service
Many industrial plants utilize Hydraulic Power Units (HPUs), where pumps pressurize hydraulic fluid whose energy is then used to perform work. HPUs are found in many applications and require hoses and tubing to connect the various system components (pumps, valves, cylinders, etc.). While rigid hydraulic tubing may be used to connect stationary components, hydraulic hoses are also common, as they provide flexibility and versatility while safely conveying high-pressure fluids.
Flanged Hose Considerations
According to a recent report by the U.S. Chemical Safety and Hazard Investigation Board (CSB), 37% of incidents they investigated occurred in chemical and manufacturing facilities prior to, during, or immediately following maintenance activities; of the investigated incidents, 410 resulted in injuries while 86 led to fatalities.
