SPIRIT OF STANLY 2024: SNAP reporter covered his share of unusual stories - The Stanly News & Press
Published 11:50 am Tuesday, April 2, 2024 Most writers guard their solitude. Fred T. Morgan never stood a chance. Morgan began his esteemed 34-year career at the Stanly News & Press in 1951, spending a chunk of his writing days in a newsroom with four other newsmen, four desk phones and four clacking typewriters — not exactly the sound of silence. When his byline first appeared, his readers were asking, “Who’s Fred Morgan?” His colleague at the time, George Weaver, tried to tell them.

Hot Grill Cheese-Stuffed Hotdog Buns Recipe
Slice the cheese into sticks (about the size of string cheese). Season the ground beef with salt and pepper and split it up into 5 to 6 palm-sized balls. Flatten each ball out into a rectangle. Place a cheese stick towards the bottom. Roll it up, making sure that the ground beef is evenly concealing the cheese stick. Place the soon-to-be burger dogs on a hot grill. Grill for 6 to 10 minutes, turning the dogs when charred grill marks appear on a side.
From Dec. 24, 1959: 'Old folks share Xmas memories'
Editor’s Note: This piece appeared in the Dec. 24, 1959 Sawyer County Record. Mrs. Fred Morgan interviewed people at a local 'rest home: who tell their stories of Christmases past.(Coincidentally, Mrs. Morgan’s descendent, Haley, is this week’s “Neighbor” on page 1C.) This was written in 1959 so you can count back to when these people were born — between about 1870 and 1890. The childhoods they recall were 100 to 120 years ago.
A surprising remedy for poison oak
Everyone in my family was subject to getting poisoned from poison oak except my dad. My wife is highly allergic to it and has had real battles combating the spread of the rash. It has been a lifetime battle to combat the itch of poison oak. Some fortunate people are not affected by this plant, but if most of us touch it we will get the breaking out of itch. It can be very serious and cover large portions of our skin.
should all permaculture stuff be for free?
posted 8 years ago 1 Number of slices to send: Optional 'thank-you' note: paul wheaton wrote: people who sell are clearly biased by their commercial position and to discuss this with them might be counterproductive in the sense that it may only aggravate them further... About three months ago, I gave everything away for free. And now I have started to sell some stuff. So I guess that discussing this issue with me might be counterproductive? You are suggesting this while using my site for free.
Amount of land per person?
posted 10 years ago 2 Number of slices to send: Optional 'thank-you' note: The question of acres per person is useful and important as a research topic, but I think total self-sufficiency makes a better learning exercise than a lifestyle.
The Wheaton Eco Scale
posted 10 years ago Number of slices to send: Optional 'thank-you' note: Interesting thread. I have mentioned a little what we are doing, but I guess to see where we are on the scale, I will do a full disclosure, or close to it. We have planted more than 150,000 trees, in Costa Rica, in order to bring back forest. These trees are owned (most of them) by others, to enable to to participate with us in bringing back forest.
