Association between exposure to fine particulate matter and osteoporosis: a population-based cohort study - Osteoporosis International
Abstract Summary Long-term environmental air pollution exposure was associated with osteoporosis’ risk in a cohort of women at high risk of fracture. Cortical sites seemed to be more susceptible to the exposure’s effect. Introduction Environmental air pollution has been associated with disruption of bone health at a molecular level. Particulate matter (PM) exposure can simultaneously stimulate bone resorption and halt bone formation.
Risk of fragility fractures in obesity and diabetes: a retrospective analysis on a nation-wide cohort
Abstract Summary This study aims to investigate the role of obesity and diabetes on bone health in a nation-wide cohort of women with high risk of fracture. Introduction The role of obesity and diabetes on fracture risk is yet poorly understood. Body mass index (BMI) and bone mineral density (BMD) are strongly correlated; however, patients with elevated BMI are not protected against fractures, configuring the obesity paradox.
Factors associated with the contemplative stage of readiness to initiate osteoporosis treatment
Abstract Summary We investigated the factors associated with readiness for initiating osteoporosis treatment in women at high risk of fracture. We found that women in the contemplative stage were more likely to report previously being told having osteoporosis or osteopenia, acknowledge concern about osteoporosis, and disclose prior osteoporosis treatment.
Comments on Kanis et al.: Algorithm for the management of patients at low, high, and very high risk of osteoporotic fractures
We read with great interest the paper by Kanis et al. describing a new algorithm for the management of patients at risk of fragility fracture [1]. The authors suggest to arithmetically adjust the FRAX™ with simple anamnestic variables that were not previously included in the algorithm, and outline a new category of risk (i.e., very high).
Glucocorticoid-induced osteoporosis: 2019 concise clinical review
Concise Clinical Review First Online: 25 February 2019 Abstract Glucocorticoids remain widely used for many medical conditions, and fractures are the most serious common adverse event related to long-term glucocorticoid use. Glucocorticoid-induced osteoporosis (GIOP) develops in a time- and dose-dependent manner, but even at low doses, an increased risk of fragility fracture may be observed even within the first month of treatment.
