BOOK REVIEW | The War for England's Shores: S-Boats and the Fight Against British Coastal Convoys
Small ships, coastal forces, narrow seas, shallow seas, littoral combat: call them what you will, but the oft-ignored subject of small naval vessels is more important now, yet less conspicuous, than it has probably ever been. That is what makes this fine history of Germany and Britain’s naval operations in the North Sea and English Channel during World War II so timely and important.
Can virtual reality simulation prepare patients for an MRI experience?
Abstract Introduction A Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) examination is often described by patients as frightening and uncomfortable. Michigan War Studies Review
The Royal Navy in the Age of Austerity 1919–22: Naval and Foreign Policy under Lloyd George The British Royal Navy between the First and Second World Wars has been much studied. CHOW: Salisbury Steak
CHOW is a blog and video series exploring the history behind U.S. Navy culinary traditions. GREASE is the word. At least when it comes to preparing a staple in the chow halls of the Navy and the middle school cafeteria: Salisbury Steak. When I was looking for a new food staple for the new CHOW video, my coworker John piped in immediately. “You should do Salisbury Steak,” he said, “we ate that so much when I was on submarines.” I was intrigued.
Russian Spy Ship Off Delaware Brings Back Cold War Memories
The spotting of a Russian surveillance ship 70 miles off of the Delaware coast is reminiscent of the Cold War. Of note back then, bathers on East Coast beaches could frequently spot the trawlers with the red stack bearing the familiar hammer and sickle. Back then, the U.S. only claimed three miles for territorial waters. Now it’s twelve miles.
BOOK REVIEW - The Royal Navy in the Age of Austerity 1919-22: Naval and Foreign Policy under Lloyd George
Having successfully met the greatest threat to British maritime dominance since the Napoleonic era, the Royal Navy emerging victorious from the World War still faced an uncertain future. The building programs of formal and informal allies, Japan and the United States, respectively, potentially heralded yet a new challenge to her dominance, but the most immediate danger appeared to be the empty coffers of the Treasury which could not stand the burden of meeting another naval arms race.
Get the science right when paying for nature's services
|
Payments for Ecosystem Services (PES) mechanisms leverage economic and social incentives to shape how people influence natural processes and achieve conservation and sustainability goals. Beneficiaries of nature's goods and services pay owners or stewards of ecosystems that produce those services, with payments contingent on service provision (1, 2). Integrating scientific knowledge and methods into PES is critical (3, 4).
