With sufficient energy resolution, resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (RIXS) can be an ideal probe for revealing the CDW excitations in cuprates. By tuning the incident photon energy to the Cu L -edge (Fig. 1a), the resonant absorption and emission processes can leave the system in excited final states, which couple to a variety of excitations arising from orbital, spin, charge, and lattice degrees of freedom15.
We measured the momentum dependence of magnetic excitations in the model spin-1/2 2D antiferromagnetic insulator Sr2CuO2Cl 2 (SCOC). We identify a single-spin-wave feature and a multimagnon continuum, with different polarization dependences. The spin waves display a large (70 meV) dispersion between the zone-boundary points (π, 0) and (π/2, π/2).
