Gabriel Rinaldi’s Biography

I am team lead at Süddeutsche Zeitung Dossier Digitalwende, covering the digital dimension of security and politics. As a founding member of SZ Dossier, a newsletter-based information service focusing on German policy, I strive to shed light on the inner workings of power and policymaking in Berlin.

Born in the Black Forest in 1997, I grew up between Swabian province and Italian Mediterranean. My academic journey took me to the Humboldt University of Berlin and King’s College London, where I studied Political Sciences and Sociology. Later, I pursued a double degree in International Affairs and Economics at the Hertie School in Berlin and Bocconi University in Milan. I also completed an executive course at the University of Chicago and a journalism traineeship at the Catholic Journalism School ifp in Munich.

Before my role at SZ Dossier, I started my full-time career in POLITICO’s Berlin office and worked for news outlets such as The Washington Post, SPIEGEL, Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, Tagesspiegel, and taz. I was named Top 30 under 30 in journalism by medium magazine, and awarded journalistic scholarships at the European Journalism Centre (EJC) and the Catholic Journalism School ifp. Most recently, I was awarded first place of the Media Award for Digital Enlightenment 2022 in the Category Written Word.

Beyond reporting, I regularly give talks about my work as a journalist and teach students and young media makers about journalism. My keynotes, workshops, and seminars often focus on media literacy, fact-checking, and data journalism. I am also a mentor at MentorMe and ambassador at GermanDream. Furthermore, I regularly host events and panel discussions as a moderator.

Besides German politics, I am interested in international relations and the impact of emerging technologies on policy and society, particularly cybersecurity, artificial intelligence, and the metaverse. I speak German and Italian natively, and am fluent in English and French. In addition, I am a certified mental health first responder. When offline, I enjoy passionately following my favorite football team, Genoa CFC.
