On April 12, Viktor Orbán’s sixteen years of illiberal rule came to an end in Hungary. Opposition leader Péter Magyar defeated Orbán in a landslide victory, securing a two-thirds majority in parliament. Analysts in Hungary and abroad are now busy trying to make sense of what configuration of developments made it possible to unseat a leader widely celebrated in global right-wing circles for transforming Hungary into a textbook case of illiberal authoritarianism.
