Four Question Areas
Even though the vigil to discuss the former piano factory in Ivoryton was canceled, people have responded with their ideas. Their feedback falls into four question areas: (1) What physical and emotional dangers does a deteriorating building in the midst of a community pose to the residents? Should the Town conduct a survey of the residents of Ivoryton to ascertain how they feel and go about their business in the presence of such an eyesore?
Did Not Cancel
The organizers of the Vigil scheduled for Nov. 15, in Ivoryton did not cancel the event. The cancellation was announced on Essex Town Hall News without the name of the official or department who did cancel the Vigil. The reason for cancelling was “significant public safety concerns” without details. The announcement was also made on the Town’s Facebook page. Absent detailed and helpful information, the online responses were speculative and uncertain.
An Insult
In my opinion, the condition of the former Pratt Read Co. property is an insult to the people of Ivoryton; it also disrespects the 100-year history of working people providing for their families within its walls, and it desecrates the land on which it rests. In 1986, Pratt Read sold its property to Sohmer Holding Company, a Delaware corporation. In 2002, Sohmer put the property up for auction and sold it for $880,000 to Piano Factory Business Park, LLC, with an office in Vermont.
Pay Your Respects
Letters I grew up in Ivoryton. I’m descended from Yankee ivory manufacturers and also from Swedish immigrants brought to Ivoryton to work in the factories. I didn’t know the extent and methods of killing elephants by the industry until I was a middle-aged adult. I’m sad about what was done to the elephants, but it’s a sadness that can move into awareness and possibility. For me, that possibility rests with the victims and not the perpetrators.
Leave Feeling Hopeful and Happy
I like to walk the Millrace Preserve in Ivoryton. It’s a historic park with a half-mile trail. The Falls River runs through it and by one of the former ivory factories. The millrace is the channel that carried water away from the factory’s mill wheel back into the river. Information boards chart the town’s history of ivory production.

Why the Court Should Free Happy – InsideSources
Should the law recognize an elephant’s right to be released from solitary confinement? The New York State Court of Appeals — the highest court in New York — will consider this question on May 18. At issue is an Asian elephant named Happy. But happy she is not. Elephants are profoundly social animals, flourishing best in a hierarchically structured herd. Despite this, Happy has no contact with other elephants.
Chimpanzee Rights: The Philosophers’ Brief
Since 2013, an organization called the Nonhuman Rights Project has brought before the New York State courts an unusual request—asking for habeas corpus hearings to determine whether Kiko and Tommy, two captive chimpanzees, should be considered legal persons with the fundamental right to bodily liberty.
You Should Not Have Let Your Baby Die
Some 1,100 infants are born annually in this country with trisomy 18. Many of them die of heart failure or apnea, irregular breathing that stops temporarily. Sam cannot breathe on his own at all. In an era of less technologically sophisticated medicine, your wife suggests, Sam would have died at birth? Yes. Even with today’s respirators, cardiac support equipment and antibiotics, nearly 30 percent will die in the first month; 90 percent will die before their first birthday.
And Vashti Refused: A Gay Man Finds a Biblical Role Model
It was always a source of disappointment for me that I was not able to find a role model for myself in the Bible. As a gay man, I have scoured and looked between the lines for someone whose story has a special meaning for me, whose situation addresses my own. Since the Bible has meant a great deal to me, I particularly wanted to find a personal, empowering connection to it.
