Another View: Statewide network would improve floodplains
By Jim Provenza, Gary Sandy and Robin Kulakow In California’s contentious water battles, finding points of agreement is a challenging task as diverse interests compete for a steadily dwindling, essential natural resource. By pulling together these diverse interests, we found a way to make progress towards improving what is arguably California’s hardest-working floodplain, the 60,000-acre Yolo Bypass.
Yolo County, Woodland preparing for a ‘new normal’ | Another View
No one likes being told to wait. Americans are a people who love to be active, to engage and to move forward. It’s consistent with our love of freedom and our national character. The current “shelter at home” period has tried the patience of a great many people and that’s understandable. At the same time it has worked.
‘Roadmap to Recovery’ takes county to a better place | Another View
Thanks to the extraordinary efforts of Yolo County residents who have observed the standards of the continuing “Shelter in Place” order, we are now, as a county, poised to begin a slow reopening process called ‘Roadmap to Recovery.’ This Roadmap attempts to strike a balance between caution and containing the course of the virus. We are all in this together and success only comes when we are working in tandem and not in opposition.
Commentary: County sets ‘Roadmap to Recovery’
By Gary Sandy Special to The Enterprise Thanks to the extraordinary efforts of Yolo County residents who have observed the standards of the continuing “Shelter in Place” order, we are now, as a county, poised to begin a slow reopening process called “Roadmap to Recovery.” This roadmap attempts to strike a balance between caution and containing the course of the virus. We are all in this together and success only comes when we are working in tandem and not in opposition.
Commentary: Getting the numbers right
By Gary Sandy Special to The Enterprise I need to correct the record as it relates to two recent letters to the editor addressing foster care in Yolo County. Each of the letters mistakenly inflate the number of Yolo County children in foster care by nearly double the actual amount. For example, on Oct. 1, 2019 there were 391 children in foster care in Yolo County, including those placed with relatives.
Yolo Juvenile Hall should be repurposed
It is time to rethink juvenile justice in Yolo County and repurpose our under-used juvenile hall. The Yolo County Board of Supervisors is currently considering a proposal to re-purpose our juvenile hall for 18 to 24 months. The proposal would include a contract with a nearby county to provide secure setting for the small number of Yolo youth who require that service. Nearly 15 years ago the County of Yolo put the finishing touches on its new 90-bed Juvenile Hall.
Commentary: Stand up for mental health services
By Gary Sandy Special to The Enterprise May is Mental Health Awareness Month, an observance that creates an opportunity to both promote mental health and to reduce the persistent stigma around mental illness. Both statewide and in Yolo County, an estimated 5% of the population suffer from serious mental illness. This is nearly 11,000 people in our county of 220,000 residents.
Another View: The maestro of Douglass Middle School has left the building
Retired is an inadequate word to summarize Ken Holck’s 32 years of consecutive service to the students of Woodland’s public schools. Depending on the accordion-like nature of school years that’s somewhere in the neighborhood of 5,760 instructional days of work, of mission, of a calling. However, to assess Ken Holck’s tenure by time served is to miss the point. Yes, he reported to work every day and did his job, but it is how he did his job that matters. To say he met expectations would be an insult.
