Interview
What was your first job as a journalist?
The first time I got paid to write was for Harvard Magazine. I was the alumni magazine's "Undergraduate" columnist for a year.
Have you ever used a typewriter?
Yes. I learned to type on a typewriter in high school typing class. Given that I've made a living typing ever since, it was a wise elective.
How is social media changing news?
It didn't invent our industry's tendency toward prioritizing expedience and trivia over hard work and substance, but it exacerbates them.
What does it mean to be a journalist?
It means doing what you love even though everyone hates you and no one will pay you.
What's your favorite social network?
LinkedIn.
Why did you become a journalist?
I wanted to be a rock star but lacked the persistence to sleep in a van until I became famous. Writing about music was the next best thing.
Did you work for your high school newspaper? If so, what did you do there?
I wrote a music column.
What's your favorite drink?
Ginger beer.
What's the most common misperception about your beat?
That anyone with an opposable thumb can be a critic. It takes a deep knowledge of the medium and a gift for clear, well-written argument.
