Gig Reviews - Across The Ocean
Author Recent Posts ABOUT THE AUTHOR: Rob Lyon has been writing about all things music for well over ten years in Adelaide clocking up more live shows each year seeing the best going round. Whether it is rummaging through vinyl at record stores such as Clarity and Title finding hidden gems to scouring the internet to find that album by the next big thing or chasing bands to get that elusive autograph and photo his passion is music all the way.
Peter Bibby & His Bottles Of Confidence - “Butcher/Hairstylist/Beautician”
Rambling, rough as guts and unflinchingly honest, Butcher/Hairstylist/Beautician is an attention grabbing breath of fresh air. Essentially an album revolving around a dedication to inebriation, Peter Bibby‘s raw vocals and deceptively intelligent lyricisms elevate what could potentially be a novelty record into a work of ramshackle genius. On occasion resembling a derelict Paul Kelly, Bibby has constructed an album both cathartic and amusing, straddling the line between defiance and compunction.
The Jon Spencer Blues Explosion @ The Manning Bar, 7th August ’15
The arrival of The Jon Spencer Blues Explosion on Australian shores always provokes an air of expectation. Freewheeling, unpredictable and, well, explosive, many older fans hold close to the heart fond memories of the band’s past shenanigans. Most notable of course was Jon Spencer’s unstoppable path of destruction on ABC’s live Recovery set, where we sat in disbelieving awe as the frontman went on an ostensibly spontaneous eruption that has now etched itself into folklore.
Tommy Rutland - “The Iconography Of Your Youth”
For well over a decade now Adelaidian Tommy Rutland has served as the animated frontman for Dangerous! and Wendy Icon. The Iconography Of Your Youth sees the multi instrumentalist step out in solo mode, a move that has resulted in an ear catching melting pot of sounds. Over a consistantly underlying current of eighties beats and riffs, there is a sonic smorgasboard of punk, industrial, hip hop and metal to be feasted upon.
Augie March - “Havens Dumb”
Reappearing after a five year hiatus, heavily adored Melbournites Augie March have at long last delivered Havens Dumb, a beautifully crafted outpouring of melancholy indie folk. Lo-fi and poignant, the album has unusual origins. After relocating to Tasmania, frontman Glenn Richards turned an underground cave on his West Hobart property into a recording studio and promptly commenced the demoing process.

Dont Let Go - Across The Ocean
ABOUT THE AUTHOR: Outside of Across The Ocean Gavin Stocker writes, records and performs music under the moniker of P Truck. He can also be found clinging to his youth on a skateboard or wandering aimlessly through the bush.
Beck - Mellow Gold
Don’t Let Go: As a human being who has occupied the planet for a tad over 40 years, it is a slightly daunting reality that some of my favourite albums are having significant birthdays of their own. As incredible as it seems, a number of records that very much formed the soundtrack of my youth are turning 20, which to me is now exactly half a lifetime ago.
