Left Politics in California: An Interview with Gayle McLaughlin
In 2006 Richmond, California became the largest city in the U.S. to elect a Green Party member as its mayor (a record it still holds). The successful candidate, who served eight years in that office, was Gayle McLaughlin, a leading critic of Chevron Corporation, the city’s largest employer and biggest polluter. McLaughlin co-founded the Richmond Progressive Alliance (RPA) and is now an East Bay DSA member as well.
Elect Norman La Force, a devoted environmentalist, to the Parks Board
We are always honored when we have a chance to endorse a candidate who has demonstrated not only commitment to environmental values and goals, but effective leadership in achieving them. This year we are pleased to have the opportunity to endorse Norman La Force for the East Bay Regional Park District Board. We endorse Norman because he has a record of close to 40 years of making parks, creating recreational opportunities, saving wildlife and protecting habitat.
California’s Political Revolution
I ran for the statewide office of lieutenant governor because I have served nearly thirteen years in elected office in Richmond: eight years as mayor and over four and a half years as a city council member. Overall we did some major work in Richmond by beating back this big oil giant in our city, Chevron. Over the course of about a decade, we beat Chevron’s money to the point where we have five city council seats filled by corporate-free council members.
SB 827 Hurts California Renters and Must Be Defeated
Creating more affordable housing for California renters is one of the biggest tests facing our state. As your Lieutenant Governor, I’ll be committed to finding and helping to enact solutions to this generational housing crisis. But what I won’t support is any bill that makes the situation even worse. That is why I am opposing SB 827. Everyone knows we need to see more affordable housing built across our state.

We also know that for many decades now, under both Democratic and Republican administrations, the ultimate consequence of the U.S. economy has been the transfer of wealth to the rich from the poor and middle class. We are now witnessing the largest single transfer of wealth to rich from the poor and middle class. The Republican Tax Scam is the continuation and the deepening of the corporate war on working families to take all that we possess and reduce our existence to a bare minimum.
Demand justice for women in West County Jail
In response to a recent S.F. Chronicle report detailing horrendous conditions suffered by female detainees in the West County Jail in Richmond, today I sent a “cease and desist” letter to Contra Costa Sheriff David Livingston. Despite massive opposition from Richmond residents and elected officials, the Contra Costa Sheriff’s office contracts with the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) for the use of the West County Jail to house people suspected of immigration violations.
Guest commentary: Federal agencies and lenders like Fannie Mae are fueling Wall Street's land grab
The foreclosure crisis may feel like the distant past, but its aftermath continues to haunt our neighborhoods, especially in working-class communities of color. The housing crisis is compounded by rising rents and an insufficient supply of affordable housing. African-American and Latino homeowners that were disproportionately targeted for predatory subprime mortgages were much more likely to lose their homes when the housing bubble popped.

Each week day over the next two weeks, visit BillMoyers.com to discover ways to fight back against our broken campaign finance system. It’s a fight we can win.
