Developing accessible speech technology with users with dysarthric speech

ABSTRACT The Voiceitt app is designed for people with dysarthric speech, to support vocal communication and access to voice-driven technologies. Sixty-six participants were recruited to test the Voiceitt app and share feedback with developers. Most had physical, sensory, or cognitive impairments in addition to atypical speech. The project team liaised with individuals, their families and local support teams to provide access to the app and associated equipment.

Staff lack proper training, and information about assistive technology is hard to navigate, writes Geena Vabulas In an age when digital is no longer optional for finding work, it is crucial that students with special educational needs leave school with the skills and kit necessary for full digital access. This isn’t just about writing a CV. Digital access is needed to search for jobs, fill out applications, complete virtual interviews and access training and employment support opportunities.
