Interview

How is social media changing news?

It enables more audience engagement and creates more opportunities to build sources, provided that the journalist can hear through the noise.

What does it mean to be a journalist?

Anyone can write, but journalism is about intent. It's about striving toward accuracy and fairness, with no exceptions.

How do you prefer to be pitched on stories?

A successful pitch would be an email or a call from someone who is familiar with my work and who has something urgently timely to say.

What tools and software do you use to do your job?

Stacks of notebooks, a voice recorder, Excel, Scrivener, persistence and an endless reservoir of charm.

What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?

Getting a juicy quote during an interview isn't nearly as thrilling as getting the germ for your next story, which will be so much bigger.
