'Bomb cyclone' questions and answers
Meteorologists are watching what could become a " bomb cyclone " — a winter version of a hurricane — forming off the Carolinas from Friday night into Saturday. The storm could dump snow in the Carolinas, northern Georgia and southern Virginia, according to The Associated Press. After that, it could turn and plow through the Interstate 95 corridor late Saturday into Sunday to dump loads more snow from Washington to Boston.

Heavy moves in tonight, drying out for the end of the week
A strong storm system moves in after sunset tonight, reaching the western RI border around 9pm and gradually moving east across the area through 3am. There could be a few gusty south winds as well, anywhere from 30-50 mph. That persistent south flow will also create the possibility for some minor tidal flooding at the shore during high tide. Showers shut off early Thursday morning, but developing fog could slow down your commute.
Warmer midweek, along with a Wednesday night soaker
After a cold start to the week, warmer air is moving in. Highs returned to the 40s today, and we have 50s on the way the next two days. Skies will be mostly cloudy on Wednesday, but it is safe to leave the umbrella at home as rain does not arrive until tomorrow night. Right now timing brings a strong front through between 8pm and 2am, with the heaviest rain between 10p and 1am. Some rumbles of thunder and high wind gusts are possible as well.
Cold exits on Tuesday, tracking heavy rain for Wednesday night
Happy March everyone! We’ve definitely begun very lion-esque with frigid temperatures the past few days, but spring-like temperatures will return soon. First, a quick recap of meteorological winter. In a sentence, cold but not a lot of snow. Mostly sunny skies continue tomorrow with temperatures getting back into the 40s. Wednesday and Thursday will be in the 50s, but rain arrives Wednesday night and could be heavy at times before exiting Thursday morning.
Planetary alignment peaks Friday night
An fairly rare occurrence is set to appear in the sky this week! Friday night will be the peak time to observe a unique observance of all of the seven other planets in our solar system in the sky at the same time. The best time to look will be right around sunset, close to 6 p.m. Mars, Jupiter, Venus, Mercury and Saturn are potentially visible to the naked eye, but Uranus and Neptune will require the use of a telescope or strong binoculars.
Temperature roller coaster as we head into March
Mild weather continued on Thursday, despite being cloudy and damp at times. Skies will clear tonight and the sun returns for the final day of the work week – and final day of February! It will be breezy and a bit cooler, with highs in the 40s. Clouds will return tomorrow night as a clipper system swings through the region. The warm front will bring a few pre-dawn showers.
Warmer temperatures continue, but rain returns Thursday
What a fantastic day it was across the Northeast! Sunny skies were accompanied by temperatures in the low 50s, and it felt downright amazing. Clouds are moving back in this evening and rain is on the way for Thursday. First, a warm front moves through between 3 and 6am. After a bit of a morning break, an afternoon cold front arrives. The rain will generally be light, but there could be an embedded heavier shower with the cold front. Temps will return to near 50° by the afternoon.
Mild midweek continues Wednesday
The warmer weather continues across the region as we get set to say goodbye to February later this week. A high of 53° was recorded at T.F. Green today, making it the warmest day of the year so far. Highs ranged from 49-57° across the area. Skies will be much bluer on Wednesday, and with temperatures a degree or two on either side of 50, it is my pick of the week. Rain will return on Thursday as a system moves through the area.
Feeling a bit like spring for the final days of February
Pretty nice start out there today, and temperatures will get warmer for the midweek as we get set to round out the month! A mostly cloudy but mostly dry day for Tuesday with highs in the low 50s. A weak cold front comes through late in the day and may bring a few sprinkles with it. Wednesday is my pick of the week, with highs around 50 under a mix of sun and clouds. The threat of rain returns Thursday as another cold front passes though.
Warming trend into the final week of February
A mild stretch is on the way for Southern New England, but we have to get past one more very cold night out there. Bundle up if you are heading out this Friday evening. Temperatures will fall into the 20s after sundown and into the teens after midnight. We have another beautiful sunny day on the way for Saturday, with similar temperatures to today, perhaps a degree or two higher. However, we will also have less wind! Sunday we should get back to the 40° mark, under a mix of sun and clouds.
Cold and breezy Friday, but a warmup in sight!
It has been a frigid week across New England and much of the country, but there is some relief in the cards. A few snow showers are possible through around midnight tonight, but most will stay dry and mostly cloudy. Lows Friday morning will dip below 20° once again. Wind will be picking up as well, and so even with highs in the mid 30s tomorrow it will feel colder. The sunshine will help, as the sun angle is getting stronger this time of year.
Snow showers Thursday afternoon, warming trend into next week
The wind has eased since yesterday but the cold remains. Another night with lows 8-15° across the area. Sun gives way to clouds tomorrow with snow showers developing in the afternoon. Another storm staying south and going out to sea. The only ones that get measurable snow (> 1″) are the Cape and Islands. We finally have a nice stretch of weather through the weekend and into next week, with temps warming each day. Wouldn’t be surprised to approach 50° by Wednesday or Thursday.
Wind eases into Wednesday but frigid conditions remain
The Wind Advisory has expired this evening, but it is still going to be brutally cold as we head into Wednesday. Breezy conditions persist tonight, which will send wind chills down into both the positive and negative single digits. Bundle up tomorrow morning! The wind will continue to relax, but highs Wednesday still won’t escape the 20s. Sun will give way to clouds on Thursday, and the potential big snow that we had talked about as a possibility will pass mostly offshore.
Weekend winter storm to bring a bit of everything
The busy times are set to continue here in the weather center! A frigid Valentine’s Day night is underway. Lows will bottom out in the teens tomorrow morning. The cold air sets the stage for a quick snow event tomorrow evening. Here is the latest storm timeline: Anywhere from 1-4″ is expected across the area. The snow we get will get compacted/diluted/washed away by Sunday morning, leaving us with a slushy mess.
Wind and cold Valentine's Day before another messy storm this weekend
After a sunny and blustery day for Valentine’s Day, yet another messy winter storm is on tap for the weekend. Saturday will be dry for most of the daylight hours, just on the cloudy side. Snow showers will start to develop after 4pm, becoming steadier and heavier around 7-8pm. Snow will remain the type of precipitation through midnight for all before beginning to mix from south to north. 1-4″ will accumulate before the changeover. Sleet and some freezing rain will take over and linger towards dawn.
Snow to rain storms tonight and over the weekend
Snow showers begin later tonight, leading to a quick coating mostly west of 95. Some in northern and western Providence County could even get around an inch or so, but any sticking snow is very short-lived. Sleet and eventually rain will takeover throughout the overnight, Rain then tapers off around lunchtime, leaving us with a mostly cloudy sky the remainder of the day. High temperatures will be mild, in the mid-40s. After this storm is gone, Friday will be sunnier but windier as well.
A few flakes tonight, then a messy mix tomorrow night
A storm currently bringing heavy snow to the Mid-Atlantic will pass south of our area tonight, bringing a dusting for coastal communities. Block Island could wake up to around an inch of snow. After a cloudy and quiet day Wednesday, another storm moves in tomorrow night. This will start as snow across the area but quickly turn over to sleet and then rain through the overnight.
Parade of storms continues this week
Hope you all enjoyed waking up to some snow Sunday morning. We are now up to 10.7″ for Providence-T.F. Green for the year, exactly 10″ behind where we would be on average to date. Our active parade of storms continues this week. Let’s break it down. Clouds will increase on Tuesday, but with storm #1 trending south of the area, we likely only get a dusting in areas south of Providence tomorrow night.
Snow exiting quickly this morning
We are waking up to a pretty uniform 3-6″ of snow across the area today. Dry air quickly took over early this morning, shutting off the storm for many. Outside of a leftover snow shower we are about done. Roads quickly became messy late Saturday Night and accidents started popping up during the onset of the storm. We had some solid snow bands come through of around 1 – 1.5″ per hour, leading to the majority of the accumulation. We not turn our attention to the upcoming week.
Winter Storm Watch: Waking up to snow on Super Bowl Sunday
Good morning! A sunny start today, but clouds will barge in this afternoon and skies will turn overcast by this evening.
Pre-Super Bowl snow Saturday night
A mild but breezy day out there saw much of yesterday’s inch of snow dissapaear, but much more is on the way Saturday Night! Sun will give way to clouds Saturday, and the storm will arrive well after sundown. Dinner plans should be fine Saturday evening. Timing remains the same for the storm, starting around 10pm and wrapping up shortly after sunrise Sunday. Accumulation will be mostly between midnight and 4am.
Quiet weather to end the week, more snow Saturday night
We picked up around an inch or wet snow across from this morning, which turned messy in a hurry as we ended with sleet and rain this afternoon. Slushy roads and other surfaces could refreeze tonight north and west of Providence, so use caution! We now turn out attention to Saturday night. After a dry Friday and Saturday, another fast-moving storm arrives Saturday night. We will see several more inches with this one as it is a true overnight storm and will hence be colder.
Messy mix on tap for Thursday
As we head into the second half of winter, our chances for snow are trending upward. First, a messy mix on the way for tomorrow. Wet snow will begin shortly after sunrise, gradually changing over to sleet/rain from south to north. Chances of any freezing rain is low for our area. A couple of slushy inches is expected for areas away from the coast, with much of it being washing away or diluted by the afternoon. Precipitation begins is likely to taper off by 3pm.
Cold snap Wednesday paves the way for snow Thursday
Winter haters, rejoice! This afternoon we reached the halfway mark for winter. After a mild start to the day, temperatures are falling and it has turned windy out there. The wind will start to lighten up after midnight, but it will be frigid into Wednesday morning with temperatures between 15-20°, and wind chills even a few ticks colder. Expect plenty of sunshine tomorrow, but it won’t help much with temperatures around 30°.
Cold air returns for the midweek, messy mix likely Thursday
It was a mild start to the week with temperatures well into the 40s today, melting much of the few inches of snow that fell last night. With all of the moisture on the ground, it is fortunate that temperatures largely remain above freezing tonight. Tuesday turns mostly sunny, breezy and still mild with highs again in the 40s. Colder air awaits for Tuesday night and Wednesday. Wake-up temperatures will be in the teens on Wednesday, with afternoon temps struggling to reach the freezing mark.
Up and down weather continues into February
It has been a damp and dreary final day of January, and the rain will continue to fall until around midnight tonight. There is also plenty of fog across the area as well. It’s possible we could see some wet snowflakes mixed in as the precipitation moves out colder air moves in, but skies will clear Saturday morning. Sunny skies Saturday will become gradually cloudy on Sunday. Both days will see seasonably chilly high temps in the 30s, but it will be frigid on Sunday morning with lows close to 10°.
A soggy end to January
It’s a cold evening out there, but warmer weather is on the way. Temperatures will begin to rise as we get past midnight, and we’ll awake to temperatures well past the freezing mark. Unfortunately, rain will also be moving in. This is an all-day event, starting around the AM commute and not wrapping up until nearly midnight. Rainfall intensity will generally be on the moderate side, meaning we only amount to less than an inch (~ 0.5 – 0.75″). Highs Friday will range from 40-45°.
Frigid temperatures and wind chills return overnight
‘Twas a warm and windy day across the area. After a sunny start, a gusty cold front brought some rain and snow showers this afternoon. Things are now starting to turn much colder. Even with slightly less wind, wind chills tomorrow morning will be between 0-5°! Daytime highs will top out around 30°, but it will feel more like 15-20° with the wind. A warmer day is in store for Friday, but so is rain. We expect an all-day rain, amounting to around a half inch. Highs will range from 40-45°.
Light snow overnight could cause a slippery commute Wednesday AM
It was windy at times on Tuesday, but we did see temperatures break into the 40s during the afternoon. And after a snowy start, they will on Wednesday as well. A clipper arrives shortly after midnight tonight, with minor accumulations through 4-6am. Highest amounts will be for points north, with some at the shore getting next to nothing. This could still cause for a slippery commute on untreated roads. By sun up, skies will clear and it will be a beautifully sunny morning for all.
Up and down active weather week!
After a cold but very quiet week last week, things will be much less mundane for the final days of January… and possibly the start of February too. Blustery conditions continue into Tuesday. We could see a flurry or two during the morning hours but it will be an otherwise mostly sunny and windy day with highs in the 30s. Another clipper system approaches us tomorrow night, and we will likely see accumulating snow through very early Wednesday morning. Right now, here is out forecast.
Parade of planets visible starting Saturday evening
In the coming weeks, Mars, Jupiter, Uranus, Neptune, Saturn and Venus will put on a show after sunset. Planet alignments like this aren’t rare, but they also don’t come around every year. The best part of this planetary alignment will be how they lineup along the horizon.
Nice weekend, plus a warmup into next week
We finally saw temperatures above freezing across the area today, but we are taking one step back Saturday to go two steps forward Sunday. Overnight temperatures will bottom out between 10-15°. Saturday will be a beautifully sunny day, but temperatures will be down about 5° from where they were Friday. Clouds increase on Sunday, but temperatures do too! We’ll be close to 40° and should be near that through the middle of the week. There’s also about a 20% chance of a passing shower.
Warmer trend into next week
Don’t get me wrong, it’s still cold, but not as unbearable as earlier in the week. After another frigid night with temperatures in the teens, tomorrow will finally be above freezing for many communities. It will be a beautifully sunny day to boot. Saturday too, but temperatures take a brief step back by about 5°. Morning lows will also dip back down into the single-digits. Clouds increase on Sunday, but temperatures do too! We’ll be close to 40° and should be near that through the middle of the week.
Cold lessens in the coming days
Another frigid night is on the way, but temperatures will be improving in the coming days. Temperatures will once again fall into the single-digits (or at least low double-digits) by Thursday morning. Temperatures will finally make it back to near freezing tomorrow. Outside of some clouds and even a flurry off to the south on Thursday, quiet weather is expected through the end of the week. Continue to watch for icy spots, especially at night as any lingering snowmelt will refreeze.
Minor snow at the coast tonight, one more frigid day for Wednesday
Another frigid night is on the way! Temperatures will fall into the single digits by Wednesday morning with subzero wind chills! This is dangerous cold, so please bundle up if you have to head out. Even with temperatures below freezing during the day, the sun will cause some snow melt which will then turn to ice at night.
Blistering cold continues through midweek
After our biggest snow of the winter so far, we now get our coldest air of the winter so far. Temperatures have already fallen into the single digits tonight, and may come close to zero tomorrow. While winds are light, any breeze at all could send wind chills below zero. This is dangerous cold, please bundle up to the max! To make matters worse, the snowpack from yesterday’s snow is going to cause icy conditions the next few days.
Tracking snow and dangerous cold for next week
The wind is dying down a bit across the area this evening, but it will still be quite cold as we head into Thursday Expect wake-up temps in the teens and afternoon highs in the 20s. Sunshine will give way to clouds in the afternoon as weak clipper passes through the Northeast. There could be a passing flurry or snow shower early Thursday night before skies clear again into Friday. Temperatures will actually go up this time, and we are back close to 40 on Friday.
Temperature rollercoaster set to continue
It was much colder out there today, and the wind didn’t help. High temperatures tomorrow and Thursday will likely remain below freezing, and with a bit of wind it will feel like the 20s and 10s at times. Expect generally sunny skies the rest of the weak, except for late Thursday as a weak clipper passes through the Northeast. There could be a passing flurry Thursday night. After it passes temperatures will actually go up this time, and we are back to near 40 on Friday.
Colder weather returns this week
A weak clipper is moving through the Northeast this evening, and while it doesn’t contain much moisture (a passing rain or snow shower) it does reveal plenty of cold air behind it. High temperatures Tuesday-Thursday will struggle to reach the freezing mark, and with a bit of wind it will feel like the 20s and 10s at times. Expect plenty of sunshine tomorrow and Wednesday, but a mostly cloudy day Thursday. A weak clipper will again pass through the Northeast, but once again without much moisture.
Light snow moving in for Saturday
The respite from the cold and wind felt amazing today! Highs ranged from 40-45, and it felt more like 50-55 after how cold things have been! Clouds will move in tonight ahead of some light snow on Saturday. We could see around an inch of snow in spots, so watch for some slick travel. Temperatures remain in the upper 30s with a bright and breezy day Sunday. We remain comfortably above freezing through Tuesday.
Cold lessens into the weekend, more light snow Saturday
A respite from the cold and wind is on the way as we head towards the weekend. Winds will start to relax a bit into Friday, and temperatures will finally pull above freezing by a nice clip. Skies will be mainly sunny through the evening. Clouds will then increase Friday night ahead of some light snow on Saturday. We could see around an inch of snow in spots, so watch for some slick travel. Temperatures remain in the upper 30s with a bright and breezy day Sunday. We remain near 40° through Monday.
Cold and wind continue, tracking light snow for Saturday
The frigid week continues for one more day before things improve a bit. Lows will drop well down into the teens again tonight, with single-digit wind chills making for a bitter start to Thursday. Winds will continue to gust around 40MPH throughout the day, under a mix of sun and clouds. There could be an isolated snow shower out there. Winds will start to relax a bit into Friday, and temperatures will finally pull above freezing.
Cold and windy weather continues, watching the weekend
Another frigid couple of days are in store for Southern New England. Lows will drop well down into the teens again tonight, with single-digit wind chills making for a bitter start to Tuesday. Highs the next two days won’t make it above freezing, and with the gusty north wind you can expect to feel much colder than that! The weather otherwise remains quiet through Friday. Winds will relax a bit into Friday and temperatures will finally push above freezing.
Cold and windy week
It is going to be feeling every bit like January across the Northeast this week. As a snow storm exits to our south this evening, there could be some slick roads down in south county for the PM commute. Take it slow, especially in these areas or if traveling south! Skies will be partly cloudy tonight and the wind will begin to pick up. Lows will drop well down into the teens, making for a biting start to Tuesday.
Cold and quiet forecast through next week
Windy weather has been the story so far in 2025, and that isn’t likely to change much through next week. Just about every day will be breezy, with temperatures in the 30s feeling like the 20s. Overnight lows will drop into the teens next week. The weekend features a mix of sun and clouds both days. A storm then passes well south of the area Monday, bring more clouds but not much else. Places like the Ohio Valley and Mid-Atlantic can expect big snows, but flurries will be all we get at best.
Cold and breezy weather takes us into the weekend
After a mild and rainy end to 2024, we are kicking off ’25 with a cold pattern. A *Wind Advisory* remains in effect through early tonight for blustery conditions, with a few wind gusts 40-50 mph. *Gale Warnings* are in effect for our local waterways as well, through Friday morning. Friday and the weekend will be mostly sunny, but with cold and breezy conditions persisting. On Monday, a winter storm will pass south of our area.
Dreary final weekend of 2024 may start with some icy spots Original
We likely won’t see much of the sun for the remainder on 2024, certainly not the final weekend of the year! Clouds are increasing tonight ahead of the next storm system. As temperatures fall below freezing overnight, we’ll be watching for the possibility of freezing rain early Saturday morning. This could lead to a glaze of ice on roads, driveways and sidewalks. Areas north and west of 295 are the most likely trouble spots, but we could even see areas south and east of this get some.
Festive flakes to dust New England Christmas Eve
It was a frigid start to Christmas week – we awoke to temps between 5 and 15° this morning! It was Providence’s coldest morning in almost 2 full years (9°) After a sunny day, clouds will move in tonight ahead of a quick-moving clipper system. This will send a few snow showers our way Tuesday morning. Overall, it’ll be a pretty low-impact snow event. We could see a coating, especially in northern portions of the area.
