Interview

What was your first job as a journalist?

Staff reporter for the Sudbury Town Crier.

Have you ever used a typewriter?

Yes. I started last week. Royal No. 10.

What does it mean to be a journalist?

You get paid to meet fascinating people and try to find a way to translate what they know and do to strangers. That's a pretty cool job.

How do you prefer to be pitched on stories?

Send e-mail but don't send me 49 e-mails. And please, don't call me to cover a gallery opening. Call me when you have a great story.

What's your favorite social network?

My voice.

Who do you wish followed you?

My daughter.

Why did you become a journalist?

I couldn't figure out anything I could do that would get me paid for writing.

What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?

Short questions elicit long answers.

When's the best time to pitch you?

Anytime.
