Interview
Have you ever used a typewriter?
Yeah. What a pain.
Who's your favorite fictional journalist?
Thomas Fowler, the British journalist in Vietnam from Graham Greene's "The Quiet American" (1955).
How do you prefer to be pitched on stories?
A short e-mail will do the trick, with a couple sentences on why this would be relevant to American readers interested in foreign news.
Why did you become a journalist?
To shine a light on the the stories and experiences of people around the world, especially those who don't have a venue to talk elsewhere.
Did you work for your high school newspaper? If so, what did you do there?
I was the film critic and entertainment editor.
What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?
Get out the office or classroom. Get in the field. I got my start with a ticket to Cambodia and a handful of story ideas.
