George McGovern: On Taxing & Redistributing Income
INTRODUCTION George McGovern’s proposals for tax reform and redistribution of income, originally released in January and published here in slightly revised form, should be read and reread by every one of the more than one hundred million Americans who dropped in the mailbox last Saturday or Sunday, with mixed feelings of civic pride and desperation, their income tax returns for 1971.

Shadow Puppy Dog Roll in the Arena Sand -- Feels Good Everytime
Response to George McGovern (Original post) Thu Sep 14, 2023, 04:25 PM Yes, dogs love a good roll in the sand or grass, it makes me happy to see their total enthusiasm in it. My first impression was that they are black and white photographs, then I saw the faintest green of the leaves and thought it's, Shadow, and the lighting and shade. They are very striking. Well done. Response to NJCher (Reply #26) Thu Aug 17, 2023, 01:00 PM was blissful! That kitty meant so much to us! Sadly she disappeared permanently right as our daughter was graduating HS. She was a cat who would ride in the stroller or bike basket down the driveway; sit inside the dollhouse; tolerate costumes! One in a million. for dear Kimani! Waterfalls - Democratic Underground
Response to Mousetoescamper (Original post) Mon Aug 7, 2023, 12:05 PM 1. Thank you. I adore waterfalls. One of our falls here has a small depression behind it, reached by a barely-visible trail. I used to get a to-go lunch from a deli, and have my picnic behind the fall. Very soothing to the soul. Reply to this post Back to top Alert abuse Link here Permalink

University returning 1,500 artifacts to Oneida Indian Nation
Source: AP By MICHAEL HILL Colgate University is returning to the Oneida Indian Nation more than 1,500 items once buried with ancestral remains — a collection of culturally significant items that includes pendants, pots, bells and turtle shell rattles, some dating back 400 years. The “funerary objects” were purchased in 1959 from the family of an amateur archaeologist who collected them from sites in upstate New York and have been housed at the university’s Longyear Museum of Anthropology.

Response to Hermit-The-Prog (Reply #21) Thu Oct 20, 2022, 10:33 AM 33. I was standing in a checkout line at the food market and when it was my turn, the cashier said real loud, “Have you ever been called Phil Robertson the Duck Dynasty guy?” I said just as loud, “I know I look like him, but I am NOT an ignorant racist asshole.” This was after Robertson had recently said that Blacks did not have a hard time during the Civil Rights era.

Light painting in the California Desert.
I recently had the opportunity to join several other photographers for an evening of "light painting" in the California Desert. Light painting is a technique where one can create a long exposure of the pitch black night sky, often including the Milky Way, while briefly lighting the foreground for a second or two with a hand held light. It takes a little practice, but the results can be dramatic. It helps if the photographer is working in an official "dark sky" area.
ok, I don't pretend to know
I figured out (almost) everything. Nothing is really "secret" but there are many options. There are some "cheat sheets" with recommended settings, and these helped me. https://photographylife.com/recommended-nikon-z5-settings https://photographyfuse.com/recommended-nikon-z5-settings/ https://www.wimarys.com/nikon-z5-manual/ And for an "I did the right thing" review, the incomparable Ken Rockwell.
Daisy with curly petals.
Response to CaliforniaPeggy (Reply #1) Sun Jun 26, 2022, 08:46 PM 2. Thanks for the nice comment. These daisies, wyethia elata, seem native to a corner of Mariposa and Madera counties. If you do a web search for images, very few show the curled petals, and a wild guess says that less than 10% of them here (and I have lots and lots of them) are curly, which is really pretty. Previous posts showed more detail of the little "trumpets" inside.

cameras... suggestions please
Response to markie (Original post) Wed Jun 22, 2022, 11:20 PM 1. That is way overkill for fun picture taking. I suggest the Sony 6000. I used it exclusively for many years to make a living with. It's light, inexpensive and has a great sensor. You can spend a ton more, but that money would have diminishing returns. Oops, I read your post wrong. I was thinking of a different Mark II. I stand by my recommendation though. Reply to this post Back to top Alert abuse Link here Permalink

The blood red moon, handheld, through the trees.
Response to AndyS (Reply #2) Mon May 16, 2022, 08:00 PM 5. Thanks so much Andy! I almost forgot to shoot the eclipse. I was hard at work editing some event photos that I had shot earlier in the day. I was really tired, and didn't want to bother with a tripod. I thought I would just try it handheld to see what happens. To be honest, I underestimated how dark the full red moon would be, and how high the ISO would go. The original files were super ugly with noise.

Smith Oaks Sanctuary and rookery.
Smith Oaks Sanctuary today to see the rookery. I think there are easily a thousand pairs of egrets, spoonbills and a few other varieties roosting there as well as a few alligators. Caught this great white in flight. Found a snowy egret feeding. Of course there were any number of mothers and chicks. May get rained out tomorrow but hope to get a few more before heading home.
