Interview

What was your first job as a journalist?

Editing a university supplement

Have you ever used a typewriter?

Yes. Took typing as a school subject for two years. Super useful because it helped me to touch type - accurately.

How is social media changing news?

It gives journalists leads but can poison the well too, with toxic interactions and inaccurate/false stories.

How do you prefer to be pitched on stories?

Via email or telephonically - but only if I know the PR well.

What tools and software do you use to do your job?

My laptop, car and phone.

What's your favorite social network?

Twitter

Why did you become a journalist?

By accident. I have a humanities degree but didn't know what to do with it. Then a friend told me about a position at a newspaper.

What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?

Question everything - work hard - and don't take no for an answer.

When's the best time to pitch you?

Morning

What's the worst pitch you ever got?

Too many to count. The worst are lazy and boringly written, with poor spelling and zero engagement.

What's your favorite drink?

Kombucha or red wine

When you're not at a computer, where are you most likely to be?

With loved ones, cooking or walking in the forest

Aside from your own, what's your favorite publication to read?

Forbes, The Guardian, New York Times, Fortune, Taste

What's the most common misperception about your beat?

That we have endless resources. Most of the type, it's just you and your laptop.
