Gerald N. Lund: How Christ’s parables are like both windows and mirrors
About the time He had completed the first year of His ministry, the Savior introduced something new to His disciples and the crowds that came to hear Him. Matthew gave us the most detail about this teaching approach that we now call parables. He records that this began abruptly enough that it took the Twelve by surprise, and evidently left many of the people confused as well. Parables were not something new that Jesus created.
What the parable of the sower can teach us about staying on the covenant path
Parables show us how to better get on and then stay on the covenant path that leads to salvation and exaltation. That is our ultimate goal because only in that way can we receive a fullness of joy. Fortunately, Jesus often taught about true discipleship. Again and again in His teachings, and especially in the parables, we find practical, down-to-earth counsel on how to change our hearts so they become more open to the promptings and guidance of the Spirit.
A touching true Christmas story from a Latter-day Saint in a Nazi prisoner of war camp
Editor's note: The following recounts a true story from a Nazi prisoner of war camp in WWII. This story was first published on LDS Living in December 2018. The winter had turned very cold, and there was no coal for the fireplace. Terry and his fellow prisoners were struggling to survive. They gathered every piece of wood, every stick, and anything else that would burn from around the camp yard, dug a small hole in the center of the dirt floor, and built a small fire pit.

The 2021 BYU Education Week theme from Mosiah 18:21—Looking forward with faith, having our hearts knit together in unity—seems especially welcome in today’s world. For those who just can’t get enough of the messages they have heard this year or for those who couldn’t attend, here are a few more resources from some of the inspired speakers at BYU Education Week: The Gospel at 30,000 Feet by Elder Dieter F. Uchtdorf Elder Dieter F.
The Miracle That Led One Missionary to Reuniting with His Long-Lost Sister + More
The following modern stories from the lives of real people show how intimately the Lord knows us and watches over His children, even those who do not hold high position in the Church. Some of these examples are really quite remarkable. Others show that the Lord intervenes even in things some might not consider worthy of an earthly parent’s attention, let alone a Divine One’s. Yet, they truly show “that the tender mercies of the Lord are over all those whom he hath chosen” (1 Nephi 1:20).
When the Gestapo Arrested 3 Latter-day Saint Missionaries (+ the Remarkable Events That Followed)
Elder Wallace D. Montague reported that he and two other missionaries were walking down a street in Dresden when they were arrested by the police. They were taken to a nearby precinct and questioned for two hours. When they asked for permission to tell other missionaries where they were, one officer sneered and said, “You are political prisoners. You are going no place.” That phrase struck great fear in their hearts.
The Revelation That Saved One Boy Shot During the Haun's Mill Massacre
Warren Smith and his wife, Amanda Barnes Smith, were among the first to hear and accept the gospel after The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints was organized. They were baptized in 1831 and moved to Kirtland, Ohio, the following year. There they were privileged to participate in many of the early events of Church history, including the building of the Kirtland Temple and the marvelous events surrounding its dedication.
5 Myths We Tell Ourselves About Teaching by the Spirit
Statements about teaching by the Spirit have been made by various people. These illustrate that there are a number of misconceptions or misunderstandings about how the Spirit actually functions in teaching and learning settings. Some of these statements have elements of truth in them. Some can even be completely true at times, but if they are viewed as fixed rules or principles, they can be misleading.
7 Essentials for Gaining More From General Conference
Preparing for general conference is always a good idea. Elder Dieter F. Uchtdorf has said, "There are messages in each general conference given as a gift and a blessing from heaven specifically for our personal life situations." To aid in your preparation, we've compiled a list of items that will help you stay in the conference spirit through conference weekend and beyond! Begin your conference weekend with a little one-on-one time with our new prophet.
3 Ways Our Own Desires Can Be Confused With Revelation (+ How to Tell the Difference)
All three of these concepts are true of prayer as well. We need to be in a position where God will send us revelation. But we also need to learn how to recognize answers to our prayers when they come in unexpected ways. And, finally, if we ignore direction from the Lord when He gives it to us, our lack of response may be the answer to our question, “Why isn’t God answering me?” Often in our lives we experience something like this: Our family is getting ready to leave on an extended vacation.
How Are Stake Presidents Chosen? Gerald Lund Provides Touching Insights Into the Process of Revelation
One of the most challenging (and intimidating) things that General Authorities and Area Seventies are asked to do is to choose a new stake presidency during the creation of a stake or the reorganization of an existing stake presidency. It involves visiting a stake where typically the authority doesn't know any of the leadership personally.

After Gerald N. Lund and his wife drove to Edinburg, England, to release President Stephen C. Kerr from his full-time service as a stake president, they had dinner with President Kerr and his wife, Yvonne. Gerald N. Lund: What 4 Mission Miracles Taught Me About Trials of Our Faith
While touring the Switzerland Geneva Mission in December 2003, my wife and I had an interesting experience. It is another example of how we learn by faith and how the witness comes after the trial of our faith. The mission president at the time was President Stephen D. Nadauld, who had served as a member of the Second Quorum of the Seventy from 1991 to 1996. His wife, Margaret Dyreng Nadauld, had served as general president of the Young Women organization from 1997 to 2002.
"Don’t Let Me Die Here": How a Touching Visit from Her Deceased Husband Brought One Woman Peace
Let me share one example of a divine signature that has special significance for me personally. This was a tender mercy in the fullest sense of the word tender. My father, typical of many other men from his generation, did not express emotion openly very often. In all my growing-up years, I can never remember him telling me or any of my brothers and sisters that he loved us. We knew that he did, because he was a good father. He read stories to us almost every night.
“So This Is What It Was Like for Jesus?” One Mormon's Beautiful Conversion Story
In a new convert meeting, I noticed an older man who came into the room accompanied by two missionaries. He caught my attention because he didn’t look like someone you would normally expect to see in a Church meeting. He was a short man in his mid-60s with a leathery face and tattoos up and down both arms. He wore casual clothes, gym shoes without stockings, and his hair was tied in a long ponytail that reached halfway down his back.
How a Priest-in-Training Became Mormon After Finding an Unusual Book in a Monastery
My wife and I were in France for a stake conference. During a new convert meeting, I noticed two young men in their mid-twenties sitting together. One of them stood and introduced himself. He said that he was a refugee from Russia. He had come to France to escape oppression and there had found the Mormon missionaries and joined the Church. When he sat down, the other young man got to his feet. Speaking in halting French, he told his story.

How God Led Missionaries to a Woman Who Had Already Found the Church but Didn't Know It
In his book, Divine Signatures, Gerald N. Lund defines a divine signature as "the Lord send[ing] His blessings in . . . a highly unusual, dramatic, or precisely timed manner, that it . . . is as though the Lord 'signs' the blessing personally so that we will know with certainty that it comes from Him." The following story, excerpted from the book, is a remarkable example of one such divine signature.
3 Requirements for Faith That Withstands Perilous Times
The following is an excerpt from Gerald N. Lund's book Divine Signatures: The Confirming Hand of God. If we are to endure successfully to the end in these troubled and perilous times, we must strengthen our faith and deepen our testimony. Those two concepts—faith and testimony—are so intertwined with each other that we cannot speak of one without at least implying the other. It is not possible to have a deep and abiding testimony without strong and lasting faith.
How a Primary Lesson Saved a Latter-day Saint WWII Pilot from Death
While carrying out a mission as a B-17 bomber pilot during WWII, Lieutenant Wendell Bradford Terry (Mike to his friends) and his crew flew through thick flak and antiaircraft fire while passing over the French coastline. The left wing of Terry's plane was hit by an antiaircraft shell, causing a large portion of the wing to break off and both of the left engines to stop functioning, sending the plane in a downward spiral.
