Why are farmers from Punjab and Haryana particularly restive ever since the farm laws first made their appearance through ordinances introduced during the height of the pandemic? Although the platform of the resistance has widened to include more than 400 peasant organisations from across the country converging on a common set of demands, the epicentre of the protests has undoubtedly been occupied by farmers from the two States, particularly Punjab.
On February 13, thousands of farmers began marching towards the national capital to push for their demands, notably the Minimum Support Price (MSP). However, when the farmers from Punjab headed towards Delhi, they were halted at the Punjab-Haryana border by the Haryana Police, who used tear gas and water cannons on the marching peasants.
Braving cold weather, official antipathy and media hostility, lakhs of determined farmers have arrived at the borders of Delhi in a do-or-die battle to get the anti-farmer laws repealed. Farmers are making history at the borders of Delhi. For the first time since neoliberal reforms were ushered in in the early 1990s, a protest of this magnitude and duration is being witnessed in the country.
