How a new Citizens Advice service will help tackle the mountain of energy debt
Citizens Advice will be launching a new debt advice service for energy consumers in England and Wales later this year, with equivalent arrangements available in Scotland. We’ve been working on this proposal for some time, responding to the significant increase in people coming to us with energy debt since the energy crisis. Across the board, energy debt has reached record levels — standing at £4.15bn and rising.
3 ways Citizens Advice will be a strong people’s champion for heat networks
Arjun* lives alone in a flat run by a housing association. He’s one of approximately 3% of the population served by a heat network. Heat networks supply heat from a central source to consumers through a network of pipes, meaning that homes like Arjun’s don’t have a central boiler. Earlier this year Arjun received a shock £5,000 bill from his housing trust covering 2–3 years, and was threatened with court action if he didn’t pay.
Laying the right foundation:
Jam tomorrow. It’s a promise that is often made by politicians, and sometimes it can feel like the net zero debate is just another example of that. With millions struggling to pay their energy bills, we need to deliver energy bill support that helps them today and brings them along with the net zero transition.
Coalition calls on Sunak for consultation on energy social tariff

More than half of private renters living in cold, damp or mouldy homes – survey
The problem is especially bad in the least energy efficient homes, with private tenants being 73% more likely to be living with damp if they are in a property with an Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) rating of D-G rather than A-C. Tenants are 89% more likely to experience excessive cold in a D-G rated property than one rated A-C. Tenants in the private rental sector are some of the worst affected by the cost-of-living crisis and are paying for poor insulation, Citizens Advice warned.

The coronavirus pandemic has shown we must get better support to people who need it - here’s how
One step the government could take to improve people’s lives Many households’ incomes have been significantly affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. In response, the government introduced essential and extraordinary measures during the height of the crisis to support people. But this crisis hasn’t only tested household finances. It’s also exposed that many of our policies, rules and processes, when put to the test, were insufficient for the challenges we’ve faced.
New York Judge Vacates Parts of FFCRA Final Rule | JD Supra
