The Horace Mann Record — I never planned to take an art history course in high school. In fact, it wasn’t until the summer before my senior year that I changed my mind to take some form of history, since I wanted to drop the subject originally. Because I made this decision so last minute, the only class that I could switch into was a full credit art history. Like many people who try new things, I felt extremely hesitant to take a course in a discipline I knew so little about, especially because of my preconceived notion of the subject: that it is boring and useless. And even though I went into the course with these sentiments about the class, I left What is a Masterpiece? with a new perspective on history, art, and the world around me. Although art history can seem intimidating, I strongly urge any and every student to take an art history course at some point in their high school career.

The Horace Mann Record — One of the school’s core values is Life of the Mind, which emphasizes the importance of intellectual growth both inside and outside the classroom. This value calls for a holistic approach to education, where learning extends beyond textbooks and lectures to include real-world experiences that challenge and expand students' perspectives. These experiences, known as experiential learning, are essential for promoting critical thinking, creativity, and a deeper understanding of the world. Despite this, the school doesn’t offer any study abroad programs, a benefit that would amplify the school’s values, and a common offering for schools as advanced and developed as Horace Mann. To better promote growth inside and outside of the classroom, the school should reintroduce study abroad programs that complement our existing curriculum.

Horace Mann Record — On Tuesday, the Upper Division kicked off Women’s History Month with a presentation by author and activist, Elissa Bassist. Bassist is currently a teacher of humorous and satirical writing at The New School, 92NY, and Lighthouse Writers Workshop, according to her website.

Horace Mann Record — After going through three rounds of poetry recitation, Emily Wang (11) won Poetry Out Loud regionals, while Ariadne Civin (9) took runner-up in the competition last weekend. The event was held at the SUNY Global Center and was composed of 12 competitors from around New York City. Wang and Civin’s wins qualified them for the New York State Final in March at the Fashion Institute of Technology. Civin and Wang quali#ed for the regional competition at a school-wide competition earlier this year in the Black Box.

Horace Mann Record — From banging drums and clapping, to singing and dancing, the Upper Division (UD) embraced the start of Black History Month with an assembly on Tuesday. The Union, a club that celebrates Black voices and culture through projects, panels, and student discussions, hosted the assembly that featured performers from the Alvin Ailey Dance Company in Midtown Manhattan.

Horace Mann Record — English Teacher Rebecca Bahr’s senior English elective, “Bridging the Divide,” traveled to the Maine Correctional Center in Windham, Maine last weekend to visit the incarcerated women that they have been working with this semester. In the elective, student groups are paired with incarcerated women in Maine to discuss literature with them. While the elective counts as half of the senior English credit for students, it counts as a college freshman credit under the state of Maine for the women at the prison, Bahr said. The visit lasted three days, and the class returned on Sunday.

Horace Mann Record — On Monday, the Girls Varsity Squash (GVS) team secured a 4-2 victory against Grace Church in a fierce match. The team’s victory added to their recent success after beating Poly Prep 4-3. The team prepared extensively leading up to the game, team member Lily Sussman (10) said. “During practice, we focus on different drills and strategies to help defeat our opponent,” she said. “Some basic strategies involve hitting where your opponent is not.”

Horace Mann Record — Members of the senior class feasted on Italian food during the annual senior winter dinner, last Friday. “The dinner brings together seniors for a group gathering with friends and food towards the end of the stressful part of senior year,” Max Feng (12) said.

Horace Mann Record — Over the summer, four students created the Feed A Friend Bronx web application (feedafriendbx.com) for the Friendly Fridge organization, designed to redirect food to the Bronx community through public fridges. The website, coded by Nathaniel Garelik (12), Sawyer Scheiner (11), Thomas Benissan (11), and Henry Greenhut (12), aims to provide a space for businesses and individuals to post about leftover food, which can then be picked up and delivered to the fridge by volunteers. “Essentially, it’s the community fridge version of Uber Eats,” Greenhut said.

Horace Mann Record — “Five, six, seven, eight,” Spirit Squad Co-Captain Gisella Fischberg (12) said as silver pom poms shook and heels tapped to the beat of Dua Lipa’s “Dance the Night” during Wednesday’s rehearsal. The Spirit Squad will perform the finished dance at the upcoming pep rally today and during halftime at the Boys Varsity Football’s Homecoming game tomorrow.

Horace Mann Record — Elliot Coates, the school’s new Dorr director, is eager to bridge the gap between the school curriculum and Dorr, creating more educational opportunities on both campuses. “If [classes are] talking about ecology, we can send a water sample down, or an art class could do a project and we could bring that up to Dorr and have it on display.”

Horace Mann Record — Tables covered with cookie crumbs, pop music, and lots of laughter filled the Horace Mann Chefs United for the Culture Club’s (HMCUFC) Sci-Fi Cake Pop workshop this Book Day. In the workshop, participants baked alien shaped cake pops inspired by the aliens in Ted Chiang’s “Stories of Your Life and Others.” After mixing cake and frosting together in a bowl, participants drizzled their desserts with white chocolate and decorated their creations with vanilla icing, food coloring, and rainbow sprinkles.

Horace Mann Record — Pots, sculptures, and clay sculptures, placed on white displays around the Fisher Art gallery, are a few of the many pieces displayed in the new 3D Art Show. Curated by visual arts studio manager Emily Lombardo, visual arts teacher Keith Renner, and visual arts teacher Mirrie Choi, the exhibit features various projects made by students in sculpture and ceramics classes who selected pieces to feature in the show. The ceramics and sculpture 3D art show will run for two weeks until May 13th.
