From 6 April 2027, most unused pension funds and pension death benefits will be brought into the value of a deceased person’s estate for inheritance tax (IHT) purposes. This is a significant change from the current position, where pensions have often sat outside the estate. The change is driven by a policy aim to stop pensions being utilised as a tax efficient vehicle for passing wealth between generations, rather than funding retirement.
