Could machine learning help to build a unified theory of cognition?
Cognitive scientists aim to understand minds as computational systems. Although numerous theories of human and animal cognition exist, they are often confined to particular aspects of cognition (domains) and ‘levels’ of analysis. For example, there are theories of natural language at the abstract, algebraic level; theories of learning at the level of algorithms; and theories of brain plasticity at the level of neurobiology.

On Twin Earth, it is composed of a different chemical compound, abbreviated as XYZ. In a similar vein, Kripke (1980) once asked us to imagine an animal that looks and behaves exactly like a tiger.

Federalism and the European left
If a spectre is haunting Europe today, it is not the spectre of communism or socialism. To be sure, leftist politics has never completely disappeared from European parliaments and from civil society. But it is no longer the sort of presence that needs exorcizing, more perhaps a shadow of what it used to be. There are profound causes for this predicament, and some notable exceptions. But the general pattern is very clear.
