On Family Mysteries and Mysterious Families I am a writer who has, over the course of five novels, drifted gradually into a space that the publishing community calls “literary mystery.” I’m not sure there is a universal definition of this term, but if I had to offer one, it might be this: I write mysteries that have a strong interest in line-level writing, character, and place, as opposed to mysteries that elevate pace and narrative tension over these other concerns.
