Letter to the editor: We need a clean sweep of Bozeman's City Commission
In the upcoming City Commission election, I’m voting for a clean sweep to purge the Commission of incumbents who are failing to listen to citizen concerns, frivolously spending taxpayer dollars, and encouraging rampant growth. Commissioners Bode and Fischer, were appointed by existing commissioners — neither was elected — and have demonstrated that their appointments were based upon being like-minded with the existing pro-development Commission.

Letter to the editor: Haaland's op-ed on Indian boarding schools only fosters divisiveness
She writes that Indian boarding schools’ we’re created to destroy Indian culture, and to torture Indian children, and are responsible for “inter generational trauma”. The actual role of the schools was to foster assimilation, teach English, and cultivate job skills — all necessary, desirable goals. Haaland cites unfortunate deaths at the schools (typically respiratory disease before invention of antibiotics), but fails to note that the child mortality rate on reservations was dramatically higher.
Letter to the editor: Bozemanites should be outraged by code changes
The City of Bozeman has declared war on our residential neighborhoods by proposing a rewrite of the zoning regulations that for decades, have protected their charm, ambiance, and property values. Neighborhoods currently zoned as RS, R1, R2, R3 will be rezoned as RA, allowing construction of 2-story/8 unit apartments — destroying quality of life and property values. It will be an open invitation for developers to cram high-density structures next to single and double family residences.

Americans should be worried with Trump in charge
Few things are more frightening as a weapon than infectious diseases, and frighteningly, we know that stockpiles of these bio-weapons exist in many military arsenals. Bioweapons are small, easy to transport, highly contagious, and some have mortality rates over 50% (compared with COVID’s mortality rate of 2%).
Gallatin Forest Partnership should be rejected
The Chronicle reported that during this summer, 100,000 vehicles drove the road to access the 54,000 acre Hyalite Recreation Area (HRA), south of Bozeman. Assuming two passengers per car, that’s 200,000 people. While celebrating the enthusiasm that our populace has for outdoor recreation, these numbers compel us to ponder the impacts of intensive recreation on the landscape, and particularly — on wildlife.
Vote no on levy and send a message from taxpayers
I just received my mailed notice from the Bozeman School District (BSD), regarding its proposed levy. The district is asking voters to support an increase for the Elementary Building Reserve Levy, from the present amount of $1.5 million (approved by voters 6 years ago), to a new amount of $2 million.
Forest proposal shortchanges future of area wildlife
The Gallatin Forest Partnership (GFP) represents a failure of its members to recognize the crucial importance of the Gallatin Range for the future of Montana’s precious wildlife populations, and a willingness to gamble away this resource by promoting development in prime wildlife habitat.
Letter writer ignored facts about thinning, science
Tony Novotny's letter to the editor (August 30), confidently asserts that we can prevent forest fires if we increase thinning and logging, and prevent "extremists" from scrutinizing timber sales. Since the writer identifies himself as holding a "technical forestry" degree, he should realize the value of peer reviewed science and the role that science can play in managing our forests in sustainable ways. But he cites no science to support his "ideas" on forest management.
Domestic sheep putting cherished wildlife at risk
Diseased domestic sheep should not be allowed to imperil Montana’s cherished native wildlife on our public lands.
