‘The Price of Life’
Quid De Cogitatione? Earlier this month, “60 Minutes,” the Sunday evening news program, had a segment by that name. It centered on an infant born with “spinal muscular atrophy,” a genetically passed condition inherited when both parents have a mutated copy of a gene called survival motor neuron 1 (S.M.N.1). That illfunctioning gene negatively affects the spinal cord and nerves, resulting in muscle wasting and weakness.
Democracy’s Corollary
Quid De Cogitatione? Rose: Rub-a-dub-dub, three men in a tub
Rose: Rub-a-dub-dub, three men in a tub 1 of 2 Trump supporters try to break through a police barrier, Wednesday, Jan. 6, 2021, at the Capitol in Washington. Glenn Rose The three men elected from our region to uphold and protect our Constitution by serving in the U.S. House of Representatives have cast up on a stricken Titanic where, believing the ship invulnerable, they’ve set up their deck chairs.
Rose: Looking for solutions, not bromides
By Glenn Rose Rose is a former broadcaster and educator living in Rockbridge County. He writes a monthly column for the Lexington News Gazette. When I started reading Jeff Martin’s commentary in the Dec. 26 Roanoke Times (“Gun control won’t prevent violence”) I thought I was going to finally hear a thoughtfully composed argument for not restricting gun ownership. He was responding to an opinion piece by Lori Haas (“The Second Amendment Sanctuary fairy tale,” Nov. 27). I was impressed.
Rose: Maintaining a loyalty to truth
By Glenn Rose Rose is a retired business owner and teacher living in Rockbridge County. It’s like I’ve been on a 26-month cross-country bus trip with a load of terrified passengers. Terrified by an erratic, self-absorbed driver who doesn’t believe in G.P.S. and thinks he knows more than Rand McNally about the geography of the United States. A driver who curses and intimidates other drivers who won’t guess and yield to his intent.

Rose: The Trumponzi scheme - Roanoke Times: Commentary
Most people are familiar with the “Ponzi Scheme,” a fraudulent investment scam that pays returns to older investors with money from newer investors, rather than from legitimate profits.
