How a key resignation attempt taught Wolff a valuable lesson
Mercedes Formula 1 boss Toto Wolff has revealed one of the key lessons he learned from the way he handled Mercedes’ slump in fortunes after its dominant run of consecutive world championships. From 2014-2021 Mercedes won eight consecutive constructors’ championships and seven drivers’ titles during an unprecedented period of F1 dominance.
Button hopes F1 calendar won't keep expanding
Jenson Button hopes Formula 1’s calendar does not expand beyond 24 events, as he believes it would put too much strain on the personnel in teams. The F1 calendar featured 17 races back when Button won the world championship in 2009, and by the time he retired in 2016 it had grown to 21 events. With that number climbing to 24 in recent years, Button believes the growing calendar is fine for drivers, but that it would be unfair on the people working in the paddock to keep adding more races.
Nobody wins from trying to divide F1's fanbase
"There are diehard motorsport fans who talk about clipping during a Formula 1 weekend, but there will also be many who think of a clip as something you put in your hair." For F1 CEO Stefano Domenicali, that's an amusing evolution from his "super clips and super chips" line he gave The Race's Edd Straw and Jon Noble in an exclusive podcast interview earlier this year.
ASX Industrials M&A (and Morgan Stanley’s 3 top sector picks)
On the first of these, CSR (ASX: CSR) shareholders this week approved the $4.3 billion takeover offer proposed by European materials producer Saint-Gobain on 26 February. The deal will see CSR, a former sugar refiner that ranks among Australia’s oldest companies, disappear from the local borse after 62 years.
An M&A boom is reshaping the ASX: 9 rebalance changes to watch
There's no shortage of M&A activity among S&P/ASX 200 companies right now – in the past week alone we've seen Bapcor (ASX: BAP) receive a bid from Bain Capital as well as Alcoa cleared a series of transaction milestones for its acquisition Alumina (ASX: AWC) and Saint-Gobain's received approval from Australia's Foreign Investment Review Board for CSR (ASX: CSR). The removal of CSR and Silver Lake (ASX: SLR) from the ASX 200 will result in a few subtle changes to the Index.
ASX Industrials M&A (and Morgan Stanley’s 3 top sector picks)
A wave of M&A activity has recently swept a few prominent ASX Industrial stocks. Morgan Stanley has weighed the prospect of success for the bids lobbed at AdBri, Boral and CSR. AdBri (ASX: ABC) On the first of these, existing shareholders Barro Group and building materials firm CRH – which already hold 42.7% and 4.6% ownership stakes in ABC – in December proposed a $2.1 billion takeover.

Should you buy the Lovisa dip?
Lovisa (ASX: LOV) shares experienced a sharp 10.4% selloff on Monday after John Cheston – the Managing Director at Smiggle – was announced as the new CEO from June 2025. Previous indications suggested that current Chief Executive Victor Herrero was content in the role and wanted to remain, according to Citi. Mr Herrero is highly regarded by the market given his extensive background in global retail, including 13 years at Spanish multinational Inditex.

Inside Lendlease’s $4.5 billion restructure: 3 brokers weigh in
Earlier this week, Lendlease Group (ASX: LLC) announced a sweeping strategic shift, involving a refocus on development activity within Australia and divesting a swathe of its international projects. Lendlease’s share price rose 9% on the back of the announcement but remains almost 70% below its five-year high, trading at $6.11 when the market opened today. The firm’s market capitalisation currently sits at $4.5 billion, well below its $11 billion valuation achieved in 2001.
3 reasons why US stocks keep hitting all-time highs (and can the ASX 200 can do the same?)
So far this decade, a remarkable phenomenon has been playing out in the stock market. The conventional wisdom around rapid rate hikes, the weaker consumer, extreme concentration risk, and valuation bubbles (to name a few) have all suggested that equity markets should be a lot lower than they are right now. Bar the difficult year that was 2022, earnings growth has continued to expand and companies like Apple and Alibaba are approving share buybacks by the billions. But how did we get here?

That was despite a softer result in its consumer-focused segment, where growth undercut expectations due to competitive pressures.

6 tips to avoid small-cap traps (and an unloved stock headed for a rerate)
The skills and experience of individuals heading up a company are key indicators of whether a stock is worth buying. They become increasingly important as you move further down the market cap spectrum, explains LSN Capital’s Nick Sladen. Though LSN Emerging Companies isn’t a pure-play micro-cap fund – it targets companies outside the ASX 100 – Sladen and fellow portfolio manager Nick Leitl do invest in sub-$300 million companies.

An “all-cap” fund manager, QVG Capital invests in Australian companies across the market cap spectrum but is biased toward small or mid-caps. In a recent investment webinar, portfolio managers from the asset manager’s two funds shared their views on markets and how they’re currently positioned. Kicking off the presentation, portfolio manager Tony Waters discussed what he regards as the most surprising things happening in the market currently.
Goldman Sachs: A mixed bag for ASX small-caps (and 2 BUY ratings)
The performance of companies at the smaller end of the ASX 300 has been highly idiosyncratic recently, rather than driven by broader trends such as an improved macro backdrop. That was the overarching message from Goldman Sachs’ latest research report, Micro over macro, as authored by small-cap analyst Chris Gawler, CFA. The report covers the half-yearly results handed down by several companies in the small- and mid-cap segment of the market.

Don’t ignore these Quality stocks sitting on our doorstep
Australian investors should remember that many high-quality companies reside in our market, explained First Sentier Investors' David Wilson and Christian Guerra in a recent investor webinar. “There are many Australian companies that are high quality in nature, which is something that at times, we as Australians underappreciate. But Australia is a very good place where companies can be incubated,” said Wilson, First Sentier’s head of Australian equities, growth.
8 stocks that should be on your radar following reporting season
Reporting season is now behind us - and what a month it was. Stocks like Megaport (ASX: MP1) surprised to the upside, with its share price soaring 28% on the back of its result. Meanwhile, larger-cap stocks like Reliance Worldwide (ASX: RWC) also saw their share price skyrocket on the back of a stellar profit result. It's a far cry from the reporting season of 12 months ago. This month, the beat-to-miss ratio saw beats 9% higher than the number of misses.
The bull case for NextDC: AI demand to be 3-5 times cloud demand
NextDC (ASX: NXT) shares traded pretty much vertical on Wednesday, up 0.7% as the market opened and closed 11.8% higher at record highs of $17.15. The company's first-half results not only exceeded analyst expectations but also highlighted that its deals are growing in both size and scope.

What these 5 bellwether ASX company results taught us this reporting season
Before the ASX half-yearly reporting season began, we suggested a handful of companies investors might watch for broader indications about key Australian economic sectors. Most of the five companies have now delivered their half-year FY2024 results - except the out-of-cycle James Hardie Industries (ASX: JHX), which reported its activity for the third quarter ended 31 December. In the following, we wrap up February management announcements made by each of them.
This insurer remains one of Australia's best-run companies, says Martin Currie
Medibank Private (ASX: MPL) shares dropped 5% in early trade today on the back of its half-yearly result, which delivered positive numbers albeit slightly below what the market expected. Still, it’s a far cry from the 20% selloff the health insurer saw a little over 12 months ago after a Russian cyberhacker breach. The share price losses have long since been recouped, even as the Australian government have made the hacker’s identity public in recent days.
As Wisetech shares surge another 10%, is it worth the price?
Australia’s technology sector has always been a quite concentrated affair, lacking the depth of companies seen in larger offshore markets such as North America and Europe. Last week’s revelation that another of the "WAAAX" stocks – circuit design software firm Altium (ASX: ALU) – would be de-listing after an overseas firm made an offer it couldn't refuse.
Westpac shares rally on the back of December quarter result
The share price of Australia’s oldest bank and second-largest lender is up more than 5% since Monday morning, Westpac's (ASX: WBC) best couple of sessions in months. This follows the bank’s release of its results for the December quarter.
Warren Buffett's Berkshire Hathaway trims Apple stake, exits homebuilders, adds energy
Warren Buffett’s Berkshire Hathaway played defence in the December quarter. It trimmed its Apple war chest, offloaded its homebuilder exposure and added to existing energy stocks. Three months ago, his 13F filings showed exit positions in seven companies including General Motors, Johnson & Johnson and Procter & Gamble as well as reduced exposure to seven more including Amazon and HP. While these were never huge holdings, to begin with, Buffett was a net seller of about $5.3 billion.
Lithium the only drag on a positive Wesfarmers result
This $70 billion market cap firm is one of Australia’s top 10 largest companies and is also among our best-known and most successful conglomerates. Wesfarmers (ASX: WES) formally sits in the consumer discretionary sector, with hardware icon Bunnings the group’s biggest revenue generator. But it runs several other well-known businesses, not only in retail but also stretching across chemicals and fertilisers, industrial operations, healthcare and more.
Which is Goldman's pick of the health insurers: nib Holdings or Medibank?
You might think private health insurers have been challenged in recent years, including the COVID pandemic of 2020-2022 and elevated cost of living pressures more recently. And that’s true, up to a point. We’ve written about the insurance space more broadly in recent months, including general insurers QBE, Suncorp and Insurance Australia Group. But what about ASX-listed private health insurers?
Rudi: The biggest mistake investors could make in 2024
The biggest mistake investors could make this reporting season, or this year for that matter, is underestimating stocks that have already run hard over the past 12 months. That's according to FNArena's Rudi Filapek-Vandyck, who believes we are now in a period of innovation and revolution similar to the Roaring '20s. "The 1920s was this great era of technological innovation, which also meant it was a great era to be a shareholder.
Rudi: The best and worst of the February reporting season
The February reporting season is now in full swing, and it's shaping up to be a big one. According to data from FNArena, 52% of the stocks that have reported so far have beat estimates, while 43% have released results in line with expectations. Of the 21 stocks that have reported, only one stock has missed. So which stocks are set to surprise to the upside over the month ahead, which will disappoint, and which have the management teams that can continue to steer them higher?

Sharp cost control underpins Transurban's solid 1H24 result
Global toll roads operator Transurban (ASX: TCL) delivered a strong half-year 2024 earnings result on Thursday morning, with NPAT up 9% on the same period last year. This was driven by several factors including, on the domestic front, continued population growth spurred by the return of immigration and an improving outlook for global economic conditions. That's the view of Magellan portfolio manager Ofer Karliner, who spoke with us on the back of Thursday's announcement.

Professional and mum-and-dad investors alike will watch to see how their biggest holdings performed, and more critically, what the best management teams see on the road ahead.
