The Story Collective
A dream of owning a bookstore comes true. A sandwich-board sign on the sidewalk, updated daily, invites book browsers and buyers alike. One day there’s an image of a globe with the chalked message, “World’s Closest Bookstore,” and on another day, the word Jolabokaflod is defined—the Icelandic Christmas Eve tradition of giving books to the people you love most in the world. The Story Collective, St. Joseph’s only independent bookstore, offers something for everyone.
The Great Tri-State Tornado of 1925
When Sam Flowers rode off from his farm near Redford, Missouri—a tiny town in Reynolds County in the Ozarks—to the nearby market town of Ellington on March 18, 1925, the day was oddly warm and unsettled. Rain and “strong shifting winds” were in the day’s forecast. He had business to conduct in Ellington that Wednesday morning, but he hoped to make it home before any storms broke out to soak him on the way. Sam’s horse came home shortly after dark, but without Sam.
Jefferson Highway Revisited
The “Pine to Palm” route took early automobiles through the Show-Me State. From my backyard in Cameron, I can watch cars driving up and down a stretch of highway. A century ago, our property was a pasture from where grazing cattle could have seen farm trucks going to market and early automobiles traversing a north–south route less than a mile away. The cows couldn’t have known it, but they were witnessing history being made.
Where to Go to See the Great Pumpkin Drop
As my friend Dan Hartman flew us toward the target on the grounds of the St. Charles County Regional Airport, I grabbed a pumpkin off of my lap, swiveled to my right, and dangled that gourd outside the plane. The dopey grin on my face—which had been present all day as I waited for my turn to throw pumpkins out of an airplane—grew ever larger.

A Fresh Take on Roadside Markets
By Glory Fagan A FRESH TAKE Roadside stands enjoy a revival, thanks to bold young entrepreneurs. Fifty years ago, during its inaugural year, Missouri Life featured an article on roadside stands. Even in 1973, roadside stands were nothing new. Generations of hucksters, as they were called, had long hawked their wares from makeshift markets along pedestrian thoroughfares, city streets, and gravel roads.
Entrepreneurs Reinvent the Roadside Stand
By Walter Kaufmann and Glory Fagan I ran a roadside stand a couple of summers and know how it is. Or was. We sold the excess produce from the huge garden my father conceived of and oversaw each year and that my brothers and I dug, planted and hoed. On the whole, running the roadside stand was better work than tending the garden, but it did have its trials. Sometimes you’d sit there for a day and a half, it seemed, and never move a turnip. Such service was, well, unexciting.
