Colorado Mountain Ranch 75th anniversary
To place YOUR audio ad here, give us a call at 303-810-5409! When Dean Jackson walks the grounds of the Colorado Mountain Ranch, where he’s spent over a decade of his life, he often looks to the ponderosa pine at the center of the campus. It’s the mature tree in the middle of the field, standing proudly, shading the red picnic tables clustered beneath it. Jackson proudly declares it to be (unofficially) one of the best trees for climbing in Boulder County.

Gold Hill hosts ham radio licensing class
Mountain communication: Instructor George Weber begins the second day of class with stories of his experience as a ham radio operator. It doesn’t take a long time living in the mountains to experience an emergency and realize that the local heroes coming to our rescue need more help and resources. Between wildfires, blizzards, and floods, mountain communities are always at high risk.
Music of the Mountains: Mollie O’Brien
PHOTO COURTESY OF MOLLIE O’BRIEN Mollie O’Brien and Rich Moore first met in 1981 and had both been in several bands in the bar scene before then. They had sometimes performed together but hadn’t fully leaned into being a duo. After getting married and having children, they realized it was much harder to perform in the bar scene than it was before. They decided to lean more into performances as a duo in 2006, when their daughters had graduated high school. They primarily perform American Roots music.
Gold Hill School celebrates 150 years
Once upon a time, during the early gold mining days of Colorado, gold was discovered in Gold Run Creek near the center of Gold Hill. The year was 1859 when one of the state’s gold strikes paved the way for the first settlement of Gold Hill. The town was more like a city of tents and minimalistic rustic cabins. In less than a decade, the town was devastated by a wildfire, and the economic difficulties of the civil war pushed people out, and local mines dried out.
Music of the Mountains: Red Mountain Boys
The Red Mountain Boys consists of Alan Thomas Begley, guitar player, Jeff Daugherty, mandolin player, Lewis Mock, banjo player, and Jon Murphy, bass player. The band formed thanks to the members all having the time to perform in a band, moving to similar places, and realizing they had great chemistry together as a group. When the pandemic hit, they continued playing together safely outside, and they started writing material together.
“Who dun it?” at the Blue Bird Lodge
By | on August 11, 2023 Omayra Acevedo Gold Hill The year? 1941. The day? Friday, October 31. The location? The Blue Bird Lodge in Gold Hill, Colorado. World affairs are dominated by Europe’s war as new threats grow that would soon involve the United States. The Japanese begin threatening Asia, and preparations for a different type of war abound. Music of the Mountains: Hundred Pound Housecat
Just before the pandemic started, Bevin Foley of Trout Steak Revival invited Melly Frances and Keenan Leigh to her house to share music and original songs. Both of the latter two had recently left their previous bands and had songs with the same obscure pre-World War II blues sound. Neither of them had ever met anyone else, let alone another female, interested in the same style of music, and the two clicked immediately.
Music of the Mountains: Derek Dames Ohl
Derek Dames Ohl has said that he grew up playing with the band Flash Mountain Flood. Within the last few years, however, he has also started focusing on his solo career, releasing various singles under his name. He has been obsessed with music since he was a kid, and he has memories of listening to music and dreaming of one day playing it himself as a career. Around his high school years, Ohl learned that his friends were forming a band called Flash Mountain Flood, and they needed a bass player.

Music of the Mountains: Moors and McCumber
James Moors and Kort McCumber first met each other in Lyons, Colorado, at the Rocky Mountain Folk Fest in 2005. Both of them were touring solo at the time, but as their friendship developed, so did their camaraderie as a duo. When McCumber didn’t have any gigs, he would play mandolin and sing harmony with Moors, and the duo grew organically from there. Their first self-titled album came out in 2009, and the record gave them an excuse to move on from their solo careers and stick together as a duo.

Angels helping people meet basic needs

The 501(C)(3) was founded in 2019 and received nonprofit status in January 2020, a couple of months before the COVID Pandemic shut the world down. Something she wished for them to have.
Historic Gold Hill Inn opens for the season
The year was 1859 when prospectors panned and dug their way through Four Mile Creek in search of gold. What they found was the modern-day site of Gold Hill. Upon the forming of Mountain District #1 Nebraska Territory, the town began to grow. The first settlement of log structures was built by miners in 1872, followed by service buildings, stores, boarding houses, and the Gold Hill School. Wanting to attract tourists to Gold Hill, the three-story Wentworth Hotel was constructed. Attract indeed it did.
