In 2025, the UK industrial control panel segment is riding the wave of broader industrial automation and factory modernisation.
Balancing AI growth with environmental responsibility: The role of electrical control panels in data centres
Balancing AI growth with environmental responsibility: The role of electrical control panels in data centres 08Sep posted by: Dr Gordon Wong, PBSI As artificial intelligence (AI) continues its rapid evolution, the demand for data processing and storage has surged, leading to the expansion of data centres worldwide. With data centres being notorious for their high electricity demands, what role do electrical control panels play in the balancing act?
Battery technologies keep control panels running smoothly
Battery technologies keep control panels running smoothly 16May posted by: Dr Gordon Wong, PBSI Elsewhere in this issue of PBSI, we consider how EU Battery Regulation 2023/1542 impacts panel builders and system integrators. This begs the question: what role do battery technologies play in the design and operation of an electrical control panel? Read more about this in the May 2025 issue of PBSI, now available here.
US steel tariffs test UK’s mettle
US steel tariffs test UK’s mettle 04Jul posted by: Dr Gordon Wong, PBSI The imposition of 25 percent US tariffs on UK steel imports in March 2025 was troubling for the UK's electrical control panel and cabinet building industry, which heavily relies on high-quality steel for enclosures, structural frames, and mounting systems.
Software advancements enable spatial visualisation of control panels
Software advancements enable spatial visualisation of control panels 22Jan posted by: Dr Gordon Wong, PBSI Advancements in software technology are playing their part in the evolution of electrical control panel design, helping to reshape how engineers and manufacturers approach design, testing, and production, and enabling greater efficiency, accuracy, and collaboration. Read more on this in the Jan 2025 issue of PBSI, here.
Electrical compliance places emphasis on sustainability and safety
Electrical compliance places emphasis on sustainability and safety 07Nov posted by: Gordon Wong, PBSI For electrical control panel builders, keeping up with and complying with latest regulations and standards is paramount. They are there for a reason, of course, but navigating them smoothly can be a dizzying task, especially when the area tends to be laced with words such as “presumption”, “harmonised”. A key component of the various regulations is the emphasis on safety standards.
Electrical control panel market on the up
Electrical control panel market on the up 04Sep posted by: Dr Gordon Wong, PBSI The UK electrical control panel market is experiencing transformation and growth, driven by advancements in technology, regulatory changes, and evolving industry needs. Control panels are becoming smarter, more efficient, and increasingly integrated with advanced monitoring and automation systems.
You have control
You have control 08Jul posted by: Dr Gordon Wong, PBSI Companies can always choose to work and remain as autonomous and independent as they can, fiercely protecting their particular niche or IP. Sometimes, though, working with others makes perfect business sense. For machine control, the picture appears somewhat intriguing, especially with a recent announcement by Siemens. Read more about this in the July 2024 issue of PBSI, available here.
Machine regulations: Barrier or opportunity?
Machine regulations: Barrier or opportunity? 06May posted by: Gordon Wong, PBSI While new machinery safety regulations appear to present obstacles and challenges for UK machine builders and system integrators in the short term, they may also offer opportunities for innovation, improved safety standards, and enhanced competitiveness in the global market, in the long term. Read more about this in the May 2024 issue of PBSI, available here.
Better late than never??
05Nov posted by: Gordon Wong, PBSI Granted, these days, contractors and suppliers are already under pressure from their clients to do more for the same budget, and to do it faster. Late changes in control panel specifications are not uncommon, and indeed a panel builder’s ability (and willingness!) to handle them effectively is arguably part of what may set them apart from its competitors in terms of reliability and flexibility. More of these random ramblings in the Nov 2023 issue of PBSI, here.
