VATs the problem?
In the first episode of season 10, we turn our attention to an extraordinary story about online retail sales, China, VAT and HMRC. Despite all the apparent jargon, it is just an everyday tale of 11,000 companies all suddenly deciding to register to a private address where the owner had never heard of them. Which didn’t stop him being sent £500,000 in debt enforcement letters.

LLPs and Companies House - a detailed forensic investigation
Regular readers will know that I was involved in recently abandoned court case between the OCCRP and a gentleman called Javanshir Feyziyev.
Finding Ali Moulaye - a detective story
Following the publication of our story about Ali Moulaye and the Ghost Companies – featuring the eponymous Mr Moulaye – I thought I’d write about the extraordinary journey we took to find him. None of this would have been possible without a great team, and Jane Bradley and Oliver Bullough were amazing to work with as we looked for our quarry. But first, let me take you back to the beginning of the story.
Danske Bank Estonia $8bn money laundering scandal: my initial analysis
As some of you may know, I was recently asked by Berlingske Business to review a whole trove of leaked bank statements relating to the Danske Bank Estonia laundromat scandal. Whilst I cannot comment on individual accounts or transactions (Berlingske will be publishing further stories in the coming days and weeks) I have been allowed to comment more generally on the outcomes of my analysis and that, in itself, is well worthwhile.
Details, dealings and discoveries - further adventures in LLP Land
What are we up to now then? We! It’s me that does all the hard work. You just come along at the end and ask lots of questions. But that’s the most important bit. How do you work that out? Because it’s my questions that help all the people reading understand what you’re trying to say. You know you have a tendency to get all technical and I force you to write things simply and logically. Are you saying that all my readers are simple? Not at all.
Dormant Volcanoes - a brief return
I need to return to my previous article (What have Volcanoes, Grenada and St Vincent & the Grenadines got in common?) because there is more to add and I couldn’t resist that somewhat obvious title. One of the things I didn’t cover in that article was the company secretary who acted alongside the wonderfully named Melissa Keisha Da Silva-Miller. And it was: CSL Secretaries Limited was incorporated on 27 May 2002 so they’ve been around for quite a while.
What have Volcanoes, Grenada and St Vincent & the Grenadines got in common?
Is that the start of a joke? I think we should write this article and let our readers decide, don’t you? Are we going to see some real people in this discussion? Yes! Would you like to meet them? OK. Here they are: Wow! They’re not exactly run of the mill names, are they? No, they are not. You’ll have to wait a minute to find that out. I can’t give away all my secrets this early in the piece. I’m trying to build a bit of suspense here. OK. So why don’t you start at the beginning.
We need to talk about RLEs
What are they? They are the legal entity equivalent of a PSC. That’s not a lot of help, actually. OK. A PSC is someone who is in a position to exercise control over a legal entity, whether that’s a limited company, limited liability partnership, limited partnership or whatever. How do you work out whether they are in a position of control? You mean my other question weren’t any good? No, just that your last one was a bit more interesting. You’re welcome.
Help! I don’t know who I work for!
Just a quick article for the end of the week. And it’s another example of the lack of any sort of checks by Companies House. Here are three examples of paperwork being submitted by entities that have nothing to do with the partnership for which they are filing. First up is Manhattan Industries LLP which is represented by two designated members as you can see from the attached screenshot. NOTE: 2 officers/0 resignations (i.e. there has never been anyone else representing the company.
Ali Moulaye, Algorithms and a Lot of Unlikely Alignments
Do you ever have those “I wonder what would happen if…” moments? I get them all the time and, mostly, move on before I can do anything about them but I had one a few weeks ago which intrigued me enough to investigate further.
A Tale of Two Entities
Every now and again, you see stuff on Companies House that you have to look at twice to make sure you have read it correctly. Here is one recent example which I will post without comment. It starts with this article in a recent edition of Berlingske Business (the Danish equivalent of the Financial Times) – the article can be found here. My senses always prick up when I see references to LLPs and, anyway, I had heard of these two before.
Corporate registers and the veneer of transparency
The government has just announced, to some fanfare, that it is going to require British Overseas Territories (BOTs) to open up their corporate registries to the same standard as Companies House (see: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-43912760). Anyone who reads my ramblings will already know what I think of that decision but I want to analyse it in a bit more detail through the use of a case study to highlight why I think it is, currently, rather a waste of time.
Companies House Serendipity
Did you know that the word “serendipity” derives from a story wrotten by Horace Walpole called “The Three Princes of Serendip” who were wont to make discoveries of things which they were not looking for but which proved to be of value? And did you also know that “Serendip” was the old name of what is now Sri Lanka? No, neither did I until I looked it up! None of which has anything to do with the story I am about to relate.
Companies House curiosities
For the last few weeks I’ve been engaged in a major piece of research which I’m hoping to publish soon. As part of that work, I have started to create a database of signatures that appear repeatedly on a whole range of company accounts in which I'm interested but which don’t always carry a by-line saying who they are. As it started to grow, I started to notice a few anomalies, so I’ve decided to take a short break from the major article to post this shorter, slightly more amusing one.
Goodbye Ali Moulaye, hello Kang Dong-Hee!
GEEK ALERT – this is a long and, to those who are not really into complex investigations, rather nerdy look at what is hidden in plain sight amongst the filings for UK LLPs. I make no apology for this as I am a self-confessed Geeky Nerd (or should that be Nerdy Geek?) What would I like to happen next as a result of this article? 1. To maintain pressure on the UK government to significantly improve due diligence on these registrations and filings.
Money Laundering Central - why the UK is a hub for criminal money
We all know the story of the Emperor’s New Clothes. How the naked emperor was convinced that only people with the right levels of intelligence and taste could see his new clothes and that they were invisible to those without the intellect or refinement to appreciate their beauty. I want to talk about the modern equivalent –LLPs and SLPs (or, as I think of them the places where Lots and Lots of People Successfully Launder Prodigiously).
Who is Ali Moulaye and why does it matter?
It’s impossible for anyone working in the field of Anti-Financial Crime, KYC or Anti-Money Laundering not to have noticed that there have been a number of high profile money laundering cases over the past few years. High on that list would be the Deutsche Bank Mirror Trades and subsequent fine, especially if, like me, you have worked or are working at Deutsche Bank in KYC.
