Refs need technology... fast!
London - Raheem Sterling’s cross, which was clearly out of play, further highlights the need for technology to help match officials. Assistant referee Scott Ledger did not see that the ball had gone out before Sterling crossed for Kevin De Bruyne to make it 2-1 to Manchester City. It was a close call but slow-motion replays (right) showed conclusively the ball was out.
Yes Mertesacker, it was a red card!
London - Mark Clattenburg was absolutely right to dismiss Arsenal’s Per Mertesacker. When Diego Costa broke through on goal, he would have had a clear goalscoring chance had Mertesacker not fouled him. There were suggestions the German made no contact but, even if true, his outstretched leg impeded Costa’s progress so a foul was committed.
Referee blunder let off Moreno
London - Italian referee Nicola Rizzoli couldn’t have saved Luke Shaw from breaking his leg but he could and should have punished PSV and their defender Hector Moreno for the terrible tackle which caused the horrific fracture. Moreno showed no regard for his opponent’s safety when he flew in to the tackle as the United defender burst into the PSV penalty area.
Kompany should have seen red
Vincent Kompany should have been sent off for a reckless studs-leading challenge on Manchester United’s Daley Blind just before half-time. Referee Mark Clattenburg suspected the challenge was one deserving a red card but clearly had doubts as his body language revealed immediately. Either he did not have a good enough view or perhaps doubted his perception — he could well have been affected as he had sent Kompany off on the last day of last month during Belgium’s win over Israel.
