How will we finance climate action in Latin America and the Caribbean?
Ministries of finance are among the most influential decision-makers for climate action. What is their role? Latin America and the Caribbean need between 470 billion and 1.3 trillion dollars annually to address climate change by 2030. So, how are countries in the region going to finance climate action? How will we secure the necessary funding? Delivering the finance calls for a coordinated public-private response.
Walking the Talk to 2024 Climate and Biodiversity Agenda
Today, Latin America and the Caribbean stand at a turning point to shape a new sustainable economy. We are presented with a momentous chance to embrace the sustainability revolution as the development opportunity of the 21st century.
How to teach a spaniel puppy to retrieve
Spaniels are “pre-programmed” to hunt, it is their most basic instinct. So many new owners might think that starting to teach a spaniel puppy to retrieve would be straightforward and simple. After all spaniels have been bred for generations to hunt out game from stick piles, patches of bramble and thick bracken banks.
are you aware of the new regulations?
What's the up to date status on this? Graham Watkins gives some advice. A reader writes: “I have a really good black Labrador that I would like to have a litter from and keep back a puppy. Any others from the litter I will sell and use the profit and have the puppy professionally trained. However, a friend has told me that there is some new law that may prevent me from doing this. Can you please let me know what the situation is?” S. Thomas, Cumbria Specific laws on breeding dogs Your friend is right.
My gundog eats game
Q: My gundog eats game instead of returning and leaving it. Twice last season my Labrador ate
a brace of partridges laid to cool in the back of the pickup. The dog, a six-year-old, had never done this before. Would it help if I gave him a good feed after the shoot to last him
on the trip back home? Graham Watkins says: My advice is to avoid leaving the birds in the pickup with your dog, or put them in a container so that he can’t get to them.
How sustainable infrastructure can help us fight climate change
In October, a climate change report struck like a bolt of lightning. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) said that without a global transformation, the world would reach 1.5°C of warming in a little over a decade. In the case of Latin America and the Caribbean, rising sea levels and more extreme, more frequent climatic events such as hurricanes are already severely affecting the region. The global average temperature has already increased by 1°C.
Do Hungarian vizslas make good family pets?
Q: I am currently looking to buy my first gundog and I am keen on Hungarian vizslas. Could you please give me some advice as to what I can expect from this breed and what kind of training I will have to give the dog? A: The Hungarian vizsla is one of the hunt, point and retrieve (HPR) breeds and makes an excellent roughshooting and family companion when properly reared and trained.
what happened when I chose a Hungarian wirehaired vizsla puppy
Why I chose a Hungarian wirehaired vizsla I needed a steady breed that could live calmly with my pack of exuberant bloodhounds. A dog who could hunt and point game for my Harris hawk to work over, hunt and retrieve all day long on the rough shoot, point woodcock and be something sane and sensible for my partner to handle when stalking. I also wanted a breed with a steady character to accompany me when I was working on wildfowling trips, driven shoots and walked-up hawking days.
How to teach a spaniel puppy to retrieve
Spaniels have been bred for generations to hunt out game from stick piles, patches of bramble and thick bracken banks, and a well-bred puppy should be pre-programmed to get its nose down. However, if you do too much early hunt training with a young spaniel this can become the most important thing in its life and will overtake any desire to retrieve.
Hungarian vizsla - why won't my gundog hold a point when roughshooting?
“I have a two-year-old Hungarian vizsla that I have been training for rough shooting and although she hunts really well she will not hold a point and will run in on the birds, which makes it difficult for me to take a safe shot. She is also sometimes reluctant to retrieve, is there anything I can do to improve her performance in the shooting field?” The Hungarian vizsla can be a very versatile breed and is part of the HPR (hunt, point, retrieve) gundog group.

Sending left or right - gundog training
This is not an uncommon question and, in my humble view, gundog handling is an important aspect of a gundog’s training and should not be discounted as simply being a “trick” or clever. If you plan to shoot over your dog, in any form, you will find it an invaluable skill. All gundogs should have at least some level of handling incorporated into their training programme and the failure to do so can cause issues later when out in the shooting field.
Gundog training - marking a dummy - Shooting UK
Some young dogs can develop this quirk and, although it tends to disappear as time passes and they get experience of the real thing, it can be frustrating for the trainer. Eye contact is something that, as gundog trainers, we work hard to develop in a dog and it is a positive thing, especially when you start to work the dog. However, if the dog is so focused on you above all else it can cause issues.
When your gundog won't retrieve - Shooting UK
“I recently got my first gundog puppy and I started training her straight away. To start with she would go and pick up a tennis ball, but now she just sits or lays down with it and refuses to bring it back to me.
A strange house, a Welsh lawyer and an Italian Contessa.
To the north of Merthyr Tydfil, near the railway viaduct at Pontsarn, stands a very peculiar house. The property has been known by a number of different names, over the years, including Hafod Cottage, Vaynor Cottage, The Old Spanish House and, more recently, Hy Brasail. At the time of writing, the house, a Grade II listed, stands empty, neglected and looking very sad. What makes the house unique is the style in which it was built. Like its name, Hy Brasail, the house, is shrouded in mystery.
