Interview

What was your first job as a journalist?

My first full-time role as a journalist was as a trainee reporter on the Surrey Daily Advertiser in Guildford, straight after university.

Have you ever used a typewriter?

Yes. There were no desktop computers when I started...! And I remember the smell of carbon paper...!

Why did you become a journalist?

I first received payment for journalistic work in 1976.

Did you work for your high school newspaper? If so, what did you do there?

Not just my High School...! I edited my first school newspaper when I was eight years old.

What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?

Write. Write. Write. Just keep writing. You won't be noticed if you don't write. And you won't get any better if you don't keep writing.

What's your favorite drink?

Tea. I drink gallons of the stuff...! All kinds - builders, fruit teas, but not green tea. Yuk...!

When you're not at a computer, where are you most likely to be?

In front of an audience of some kind, either delivering a lecture to university students or speaking at a business conference.
